"Spring Flowers"
Part 8 ~ Island Bound

Sam ignored her ringing cell phone as she pulled her suitcase from the closet. Lucky had been trying to reach her for days, but she just didn't have the courage to talk to him. What would she say, especially now? Lucky had been so heartbroken when he found out that Jason was Jake's father. Was she going to ask him to hang around while her belly grew to nurture another man's child? Would he hate her for deciding to keep Diego's baby? That was a question she knew she could answer. Not only would he hate her, so would Nikolas, Alexis, and all of Port Charles. She knew she was doing the right thing. There was only one person that could understand what she was going through. Sam was hoping that he would be there for her to lean on. Maybe he would find the strength to lean on her, and they could support each other.

An hour later, Sam carried her suitcase to the front door. She paused to watch Nikolas nap on the couch. She wanted to say good-bye, but she knew this may be the first time he was asleep this week.

"Going somewhere?" Nik asked, his eyes remaining closed.

"I thought you were asleep?"

"Actually I was. I trained myself to sleep in fifteen-minute intervals. Anything past fifteen minutes and the nightmares begin."

Sam walked over to the couch, and as she sat beside him, he opened his eyes.

"Oh, Nik. I really hope the doctors will be able to give you something to help you sleep."

Nikolas smiled weakly but declined to tell Sam about yesterday's visit with Lainey. Lainey insisted that someone from his family attend the hypnosis session. He was going to ask Sam, but it seems as if Sam has her own battles to fight.

"Were you going to leave without saying goodbye?"

"You looked so peaceful." They both remained silent for a few minutes, before Sam continued " I'm going to visit a friend."

"Will you come back?"

"Hopefully, one day. But I will keep in touch." Sam stood "Please tell Alexis and the girls that I'll call them when my flight lands."

Nik nodded and then stood to make his way to the door. "The least I could do is ride with you to the airport. "

"I'd like that."

It was a warm night on the island. Warm and quiet. Not that Sonny should expect anything else. He had sent most of the servants away. He couldn't stand the look of pity that they gave him. He kept two maids, his cook, and his butler. There were days that he even banned the physical therapist.

Sonny brought the glass of scotch to his lips as he heard a knock on the terrace door.

"Yeah?" he barked.

"Sir, you have a visitor."

"Send them away."

"I would but the next boat isn't until tomorrow afternoon."

"Too bad," Sonny said as he finished his glass of scotch.

"Please, Sonny." Sam's voice cut through the silence of the night. "Don't turn me away."

As Sonny turned his wheelchair towards the terrace doors, Sam dropped her suitcase and walked towards him. "I need you," she said, her voice trembling as her eyes filled with tears.

And I need to be needed, Sonny thought. As she curled up in the chair beside him, she cried gently as he stroked her hair. Had she lifted her head she would have noticed that Sonny was crying too.
