"Regret"
Part 5 ~ Permanently

He stood at the top of the stairs and watched the adults and their niceties. The fake smiles and air kisses didn't fool anyone. Half of them hated the other half. Well, hate was a strong word. If they didn't hate each other, there was at least a very strong discontent for one another.

They sent him upstairs to look for Molly's sweater; but in addition to the sweater, he found Sam's room. He knew it was her room. Her scent is unmistakable. It was a subtle scent of shrewdness and desperation. She was here and probably flaunting her pregnancy in his father's face every day. He liked his family as it was; they didn't need a new addition. Why his father would ever have sex with her again baffled him. She already tried to destroy the family once, and when that failed, she tricked Jason into falling in love with her. Thank God for Elizabeth! She had known Uncle Jason for a long time. When Elizabeth looked at him, all her love was in her smile. Jason and Liz were meant to be together. He couldn't wait for Liz to become part of the family.

He relaxed against the banister. He knew true love when he saw it. Just as if he whispered in his uncle's ear, he watched Jason turn in his direction. Jason held his gaze and smiled a rare smile. He opened his arms. Just then a jolt of pride ran threw him prompting him to rush down the stairs. He wasn't a child anymore, so he held back and descended the stairs at a standard pace. When he entered his uncle's embrace, he felt like a baby. A baby who was safe and warm and ensconced in love. He loved his Uncle Jason just as much as he loved his dad. For once, everyone one was happy, and he wasn't going to let anyone ruin that, not even Sam.

His uncle kissed him faintly on the temple, and it was then that he knew what he had to do. Yes, the only way for everyone to remain happy is to get rid of Sam McCall, permanently.
