"Tangled Webs"
Part 6 ~ Bruised

"Sit down!" Johnny heard as the cop pushed him into the seat. Johnny wanted to rub his jaw. As he shifted in the seat, the handcuffs pinched his wrist, and he knew that his jaw would have to wait until later. 

"What's going on here?" Mac asked as he walked into the squad room. 

"Mr. Zacchara was doing 85 in a 65-mile speed zone. When I pulled him over for speeding, he decided to curse me and then proceeded to resist arrest." 

"More like resist abuse," Johnny quipped. "I'm sure that in the morning my bruised jaw is going to tell a different story." 

Helping Johnny to his feet, Mac made him an offer. "Why don't we talk about this in the interrogation room." 

Once they were inside, Mac closed the door and led Johnny to a chair. "It's kind of early to be speeding don't you think?" 

"What can I say? I hate procrastination." 

"Hummph! Then let me get straight to the point. Robin told me all about the advice that you gave Maxie and how that led to Georgie saying her first words since she's been home." Mac continued, ignoring the puzzled look on Johnny's face. "Maxie told me about your date last night." 

Really? Johnny thought. Did she tell you how we spent the evening exploring each other's body? Did she tell you how she gently bit me on the shoulder when she collapsed in ecstasy? Did she tell you that when I reached out for her in the morning, she was gone? When I called her name, she was nowhere to be found? Did she tell you that she didn't have the common courtesy to say good-bye? Somehow Johnny didn't think that Maxie told Mac the entire story. Before he could respond, Mac's next sentence ripped through Johnny's pride. 

"While we were eating breakfast, Maxie told me that she only went on a date with you to show how grateful she was for your help. You won't have to worry about taking her out again," Mac confirmed. Walking around the table, Mac released Johnny from his handcuffs "Maxie has her way of thanking you, and I have mine. I won't charge you with resisting arrest. Just have your lawyer pay the speeding ticket, and we can forget about the rest." 

Mac opened the door so Johnny could leave, but instead Johnny just sat there brooding. The thought of Maxie pretending to enjoy their time together festered in Johnny's stomach. The thought of being a fool left a taste of rotten fruit in the back of his throat. He stood up abruptly and left the police station, his bruised ego looking for a fight.
