Part 2 ~ Frustrated

From the front door, Layla watched the physical therapist leave in frustration. She couldn't blame him, Sonny was impossible to work with. As she closed the door and entered the living room, she watched Sonny pour himself a healthy dose of scotch. She had given up her job and apartment to be there, and she could feel her own frustration overflow. She walked quickly to Sonny's wheelchair. Taking the handles forcefully, she spun the chair around. As the chair turned, the scotch spilled on Sonny's shirt causing him to curse openly. Layla's frustration blocked out Sonny's vile words; and as the chair spun in her direction, she grabbed the wheelchair and stuck her face directly in front of Sonny's.

"You are not a stupid man. You know that if you don't do the therapy, you will remain paralyzed. If this is some kind of ploy to get attention, it is being poorly played." She watched Sonny's expression turn from surprise to anger. "I am not here to stroke your ego. Stop wasting my time and start acting like a man." She shook her head to calm herself before adding, "How could anyone not feel sorry for you?"

She walked out of the room as Sonny screamed obscenities and insults. Hearing his violent tone, Sam rushed into the foyer just in time to see Layla climbing the stairs.

"What's happening?" Sam asked.

"I'm packing to go home. Please make arrangements to have the plane available for departure tomorrow," Layla said as she continued to her room.

Sonny watched Sam rush into the room. Her summer tunic did little to hide her protruding belly.

"Sonny? What is going on? Layla tells me she is leaving."

"So?! Let her leave. I don't need a nurse anyway."

"The boys will be here in two days. I thought you wanted to show them the progress you are making."

"What progress? Every time they give me an exercise, I can see the pity written all over their face. I didn't hire them to pity me."

"No one is pitying you," Sam reasoned, "They just want you to try."

Sonny gripped his glass tightly causing his knuckles to turn white. "I am trying. Doesn't anyone understand that? I cannot move my legs. What more do you people want?" He downed his drink, and as he poured himself another, Sam raced to stop Layla from leaving. A frustrated Sonny equaled a dangerous Sonny, and Sam had experienced enough danger for one lifetime. She would beg Layla to stay even if she had to double her salary.
