"Murder, Marriage, and Mayhem"
Part 4 ~ Replaced
by Kimberly
6/12/10

For the first time in his life, Jason was happy to be at the police station. He was eager to tell the FBI everything he knew about finding Georgie. If he was going to find Emily, he had to use every resource even if it meant talking to the FBI. As he watched Spinelli enter the interrogation room, Jason felt someone standing a few feet behind him, just far enough to move out of the way should he turn to grab her. He scared her on some level, but she would never let that show, not in Madrid and definitely not now.

"How are you?" Lainey's voice was calm and careful. Jason turned to look at her. Her hair was pulled back and pinned into a severe bun at the nape of her neck. Her black dress suit hung loosely on her slim frame, giving the illusion of a curveless, detached woman. The woman that he spent time with was gone, replaced by Dr. Winters. For years, people had been trying to get him into therapy. He refused then and he would refuse now. Without replying, he turned to stare at the closed interrogation room door.

Lainey took a few steps around him. If he wasn't going to face her, she could at least see his profile. His features were hard, eyes lifeless and breathing shallow. The brother who paced the room, and waited in anticipation for any clues about his sister was gone, replaced by the hitman. "Have you spoken to Nikolas?" she asked cautiously "He hasn't returned my phone calls."

"Briefly," Jason muttered.

Surprised that he even answered her, Lainey quickly continued, "I'm worried about Nikolas. Not finding Emily may cause him to act irresponsibly. He may not be thinking clearly and may put himself in danger. He needs to let the FBI handle it from now on."

When Jason didn't reply, Lainey dug a little deeper "He isn't planning on doing anything dangerous, is he?"

Jason could hear the concern in her voice and as he turned to answer her, he spotted Nikolas coming through the door. "Why don't you ask him?" Jason said as he gazed at an approaching Nikolas.

Clad in an expensive gray sports jacket and slacks, Nikolas looked like a modern prince. He moved through the police station as if he owned it. Gone was the heartbroken man looking for his lost love, replaced by a prince who was looking to punish anyone in his path. As he walked toward the interrogation room, he nodded to Jason in acknowledgement. He glanced at Lainey. "Hello," he said.

"Nikolas, I've been trying to reach you."

Nikolas did not attempt to hide his distaste as he looked at Lainey from head to toe. Her hairstyle did nothing to soften her features and the ill-fitting suit hid her firm breasts, toned legs and small waist. Angry at where his thoughts were taking him, Nikolas glared at her. "When I want to talk to a doctor, I'll make an appointment," he spit out. He watched her frown openly, but before she could reply, a police officer called her name.

"Dr. Winters, we will take your statement in Interrogation room B. Please follow me." Lainey hesitated before following the police officer down the hallway. There was a time and a place for everything, she reminded herself. Right now was Emily's time. Lainey quickened her steps to keep pace with the officer; she would deal with Nikolas later.

Nikolas watched her walk away, hoping that she would turn around so he could frown at her again. But when she disappeared around the corner without glancing back, Nikolas felt his anger replaced by disappointment.
