"Accidental Autumn"
Part 8 ~ A Family

Alexis watched Mac scurry from the kitchen to the patio. His 'Kiss the Cook' apron was stained with Bar-B-Q sauce and his cheeks were sun-kissed and glowing. Alexis never thought of Mac as a perfectionist, but as she watched him change the place settings and rearrange the patio furniture, it became clear to Alexis how much this gathering meant to Mac.

"Slow down," Alexis warned Mac gently. "You are going to tire yourself out before anyone gets here."

"I know." He said as he wiped his hands on the apron, "I just need to chill the wine."

Within ten minutes, Patrick and Emma, as well as Robert and Kelly had arrived, Mac had discarded the messy apron and a bottle of Malbec was chilling in an ice bath. Kristina and Molly had taken on the task of entertaining Emma while Mac and Patrick fussed over the grill. Kelly and Robert seemed happy while they whispered softly and drank beers in the shadiest section of the patio. Alexis smiled to herself as she gazed at her soon-to-be extended family. This marriage just might work, she thought.

At the chiming of the doorbell, Alexis sauntered off to open the door. Although she was expecting Robin, Alexis was not prepared for Robin's frazzled state as she leaned on a weary-eyed Liz.

"Alexis?" Robin questioned but before Alexis could reply, Robin shook her head quickly erasing whatever questions were lingering. "Where is Mac? I need to speak with him right away."

"He's outside at the grill," Alexis replied. Before she even finished her sentence, Robin was already racing through the house with Liz right behind her.

"Uncle Mac," Robin shouted. Her voice was laced with panic and hysteria. When she saw her uncle, she started to cry and laugh at the same time. Robin stopped at the patio table and leaned against it for support. The sobs were louder now causing everyone to turn in her direction.

"Robin, what is it?" Mac said as he ran to her.

With the last ounce of strength that she had, Robin pushed herself from the table and ran into Mac's arms. Her sobs turned to laughter as she turned her face up to look at her uncle.

"They found her, Uncle Mac. They found her."

"Found who?"

"Georgie. She's alive. She's alive!" Robin screamed." They are bringing her home now."

"It's true," Liz confirmed. As Liz told the story of Nikolas' dreams and the adventure of tracking down Emily, she watched Mac's expression change from doubt to hope. "They should be landing in the next 6 hours. I'm not sure what condition Georgie is in. The only person that she recognizes is Spinelli. We won't know if this is a temporary condition until after she's been examined."

"I don't believe it." Mac whispered as he stepped out of Robin's embrace, "I won't believe it until I see her."

Liz nodded in understanding. It would be hard for anyone to believe such an incredible story. Robert walked up behind Mac and placed a hand on his shoulder. "We'll all go to the hospital together," Robert said. "And right now, we really have a reason to celebrate."

As Robert started to open the wine, he asked Liz to tell him the story again. As everyone became engrossed in the tale, Mac slipped away to his room. It was Alexis who found him sitting on his bed weeping silently. She didn't know what to say, so she kissed him gently on the lips and gathered him in her arms. Whatever happened next, they would deal with it as a family.
