"Warm Spring Nights"
Part 6 ~ Enemies

The motion sensors made a faint ringing sound. With one hand on the butt of a small caliber gun, she used the other hand to look through the blinds. She relaxed as she saw Jason and Liz climbing off his motorcycle. They weren't due back until tomorrow and as she watched them playfully race to the door, she knew that all was ok. Before Liz could use her key, English opened the door.

"I thought you guys wouldn't be back until tomorrow."

"Yes, that was the plan but it seems that there is a motorcycle exhibit a few miles away. We thought Cam would get a kick out of it," Liz explained before adding, "Where are they?"

"Napping."

Turning towards Jason, Liz smiled and said, "I'll get them dressed and we'll be right down." Without waiting for an answer, she pranced up the stairs.

When they were alone, Jason turned to English. "Was everything ok?"

"Yes, the kids were great. I did have to read Cam four books before he would go to bed but that was the most excitement for the night."

"Good," Jason nodded. "Any luck with the apartment hunting?"

"Actually, I brought a Brownstone on Counter Street. It's right across from the park and close to the hospital."

Counter Street, Jason thought. Yes, he knew the area. It was filled with rows of finely kept brownstones close to the hospital and a 10-minute drive to the docks. Strategically, it was a prime location. The fact that she brought the Brownstone pleased Jason. It meant that she had long-term plans to stay in town. Glancing at the stairs, he said quickly, "Tell Liz that I will be right back. I want to go home and pick up the truck. It's much more roomy than Liz's car. I'll also send Milo to watch the house. Could you be back by 8 tonight? I have plans to take Liz out."

"Sure, no problem." She said as he walked out the door. She could use a few hours to check out the town on her own. She already had a good handle on her new friends, now it was time to check out her new enemies.

"Late Night?" Ric asked Johnny.

Dressed in his robe, Johnny finished his lunch. He didn't bother to shave or even comb his hair. After all, he was in his own house which meant that he didn't need to answer to the hired help. Giving Ric a defiant look, Johnny remained quiet.

"I'm just looking out for your welfare." Ric stated simply.

"My father got rid of my nanny a long time ago. If you haven't noticed, I can take care of myself."

"I won't argue with that," he shrugged. "I just know how painful a broken heart could be."

Broken heart? It dawned on Johnny that he hadn't thought of Lulu since he drove to the mountains with Maxie, 18 hours ago. Feeling guilty, he focused on Ric to let out his frustration.

"I didn't know you had a heart." Leaving the table, Johnny walked back towards his bedroom.

Ric poured himself a drink and chuckled to himself. What Johnny didn't understand, Ric thought, was that the innocence of youth can sometimes be your enemy.
