Part 13 ~ Luck

Mac blushed as he heard the applause from detectives at the PCPD precinct. He had just come back from his honeymoon with Alexis; and since the wedding was a family affair, this was the first time the detectives had a chance to congratulate him. The desk sergeant led Mac to the interrogation office where a small wedding cake waited. After fumbling through an awkward speech, Mac cut the cake and then threatened to fire everyone if they didn't get back to work.  Before the officers dispersed, they presented Mac with a wedding gift: an all-inclusive weekend for two at the MetroCourt to use whenever he wanted. As he found himself blushing again, Mac barked another harmless threat sending the detectives laughing into the hallway. He tucked the gift certificate into his suit jacket; and as he glanced up, he noticed that Lucky was still in the room.  Mac frowned at Lucky's appearance. Besides the wrinkled clothes, the red-rimmed eyes, his scruffy mustache and beard gave Lucky a wild, desperate look.  

"I didn't even know you and Alexis were dating. It's good to know the mobsters are the only ones getting..."

"Yes," Mac said forcefully, cutting Lucky off. Changing the subject, he eyed Lucky openly. "I don't remember putting you on a stakeout. You look horrible. Is there something I should know?"

"Ahh...," Lucky stuttered. Scratching his beard softly, he looked at Mac and lied, "I'm having problems with the electricity at the house, and with my father and Tracy getting divorced, I've been trying to keep an eye on him to make sure he doesn't drink himself to death." In truth, Lucky hadn't seen his father in months.

"Well, if you need to take a couple of days off to take care of things, let me know," Mac offered.

"I may take you up on that." Lucky smirked as he left the room. With any luck, he'd be taking time off to attend a funeral.
