Part 1 ~ Slipping

It was after midnight when Mac dropped off Alexis and the girls at their lake house. As Alexis guided the sleepy girls to bed, Mac sat on the couch and closed his eyes. He felt numb. Seeing Georgie, alive and well, was just too much for him to comprehend. He wanted to grab her and hug her, but her uninterested expression made it obvious that she did not remember him. Although Georgie was alive, all of her memories were dead. The more Mac thought of Georgie, the more determined he was to find out who was responsible for Georgie's new condition.

"You can stay here tonight," Alexis said, interrupting his thoughts.

"No. I'm going to go home. I need to pick up Maxie from the airport tomorrow and take her to see Georgie. I'm going to need all the rest I can get. You," he reached out and grabbed her hand before continuing, "are too much of a distraction. I doubt if I would get much sleep."

Blushing slightly, Alexis smiled before sitting on his lap. "Is there anything I can do?" she asked.

"Forgive me," he said as he stroked her back.

"For what?"

"For not giving you the engagement party that I planned. This was supposed to be our big announcement. We never got to tell our family of the big events in our lives."

"We'll have time for that. Right now, Georgie is your main priority. We can announce our engagement some other time."

"You are going to be my wife. You are having my child. Our future is important to me. It's not like I get married every day," Mac responded. "I want to set a date and invite just a small group of people. I want to get married soon."

Touched by Mac's heartfelt words, all Alexis could do was smile and nod. When Mac pulled her close for a kiss, Alexis could feel her heart slipping away.
