"Summer Suspects"
Part 11 ~ Long Distance

"Jason!" Jason could hear the concern in Liz's voice.

"Hi," he smiled into the phone. "I'm sorry that I couldn't call you earlier."

"I just need to know that you're ok."

"I am, for now," he said. He didn't know where to start, so he started at the beginning. He explained how Nikolas was still having dreams of Emily's death, the session with Lainey, and all of the details surrounding the search for Ian. The thought that Emily was still alive was more than Liz could fathom. The story spilled from Jason's lips like spoiled milk: bitter and rancid. His anger and concern for his sister was wrapped around every word like a tourniquet, hardening his heart like stone. Liz didn't need to ask what would happen to Ian if Jason caught up to him. The only thing Liz could do was to pray for Em's safe return. Liz let Jason vent until she could hear his exhaustion.

"God, I wish you were here with me." He said as his angry emotions ebbed.

"And I wish I were there with you. You don't have to shoulder this by yourself. Let me help you. There must be something I can do on this end."

"Yes," Jason thought. "Can you contact Alexis and let her know that Nikolas is all right? I doubt if he's spoken to anybody in his family."

"Ok."

"If you could, try and see if Robin knows about any experimental drugs that Ian was looking into."

"Sure. Anything else?"

The memory of his conversation with Milo and English surfaced. "I want you to stay close to Milo and English. If you need extra guards then tell Max. I don't want you or the boys left alone for any reason." He paused and his voice softened. "If anything happened to you or the boys, I'd never forgive myself."

"The boys and I will be just fine, and we'll be right here waiting for you to come home." Even as she said the words, that foreboding feeling was dancing in the back of her mind. "I love you, Jason. Nothing will ever change that."

"I love you too. I always have, and I always will."

As they lay alone in their separate beds, miles apart, the words of love comforted them well into the night and long after the phone call ended.

Neither of them realized how lonely the nights would become.
