Part 13 ~ Stung

"Did I tell you how beautiful you look?" Alexis asked as she heaped steamed asparagus onto her plate.

Sam pushed the roasted potatoes around her plate. She smiled at her mother before confirming, "Yes, this will be the fifth time."

"Well, I'm saying it because it is true," Alexis said as she smeared butter on a freshly-baked roll.

Their pregnancies had such a different effect on the perspective mothers. While Sam was often tired and required at least two naps a day, Alexis was in high gear. Alexis was able to work, spend time with the girls, and carve out private time with Mac at night. Most of the time, it was well past midnight before she would drift off to sleep. The only time that Alexis seemed to pause was when she was eating, which seemed to happen every two hours. Sam, on the other hand, would have to remind herself to have a meal.

"You're not eating," Alexis observed.

The smile faded from Sam's face. "I don't really have an appetite." Putting down her fork, she gave Alexis a whimsical look, "but I am enjoying the company."

"I know you wish you were still with Jason, but soon you'll have a baby in your life that you can give all of your love to, and that baby will love you unconditionally in return. Delving in the past will rob you of the joy you should be experiencing right now."

The words stung, but Sam knew that her mom was right. Still, she couldn't help wishing that Carly's engagement dinner was for her and Jason, and not Jason and Elizabeth. How? How could Jason claim to love her one year and then become engaged to someone else so quickly? She was sure that their relationship could be repaired. They had both made mistakes but they were getting past them. That was until Elizabeth decided to tell Jason that she was carrying his child. She carried so much hate for her, declaring that Elizabeth got pregnant on purpose. Now that she had come to love her own child, she found it hard to hold on to the hate. Could she blame Elizabeth for loving and wanting her child? Now that she thought about it, she couldn't blame Jason for wanting to be there for his son. Sadness overwhelmed her as she sipped her mineral water. She envied them, because she couldn't give her child a normal family life. Her child would always be scorned. She knew that leaving Port Charles was the best thing that she could do for her baby. As much as it stung to know that she was leaving Jason behind, she had no other choice. Did she?
