"Accidental Autumn"
Part 5 ~ Sacrifice

Ian leaned against the stark white wall. He was frustrated but he couldn't let his frustration cloud his judgment. Along with his partners, he worked for years on this medical compound. They were so close to finding the right dosage and patient criteria to make the claim of success. Now everything had changed.

Ian chuckled in disbelief. Who would have thought that a doctor, prince, mobster and computer geek could uncover his whereabouts when Interpol couldn't even find him?  It didn't surprise him that Jason would be looking for him. Actually, he was surprised that it didn't happen sooner. Why couldn't this have happened sooner when he was in the early stages of development?  He would have been able to move around more freely, but now he had patients to consider and moving them from country to country was no easy feat.  With Jason on his heels, Ian had to move quickly and this time it meant leaving one of his patients behind. 

Ian turned his head in the direction of the small bed in the far corner of the room.  She was sleeping so peacefully that Ian was tempted to touch her serene face.  She didn't respond to the drug as quickly as the others and this required Ian to transport the bed and additional medical supplies.  It was obvious that she was slowing him down and his partners were becoming nervous that Jason was too close for comfort.

"I'm sorry," Ian said. He doubted that she could hear him. She was in a deep sleep that would last for a few hours. By then, Jason would have found her.  Ian had stopped covering his tracks and decided to take a calculated risk. The odds were that noble Jason wouldn't leave her to continue tracking Ian. He would bring her home allowing Ian enough time to go underground with the rest of his patients.  As Ian exited the room, he glanced at her.  Leaving her behind was a sacrifice he would make in the name of science. One day, she would forgive him. One day.
