"Murder, Marriage, and Mayhem"
Part 7 ~ Distraction
by Kimberly
7/19/10

"Sir, Dr. Winters is walking up the path towards the house. Shall I tell her that you cannot be disturbed?"

Nikolas looked up from the papers that he was signing. He was not in the mood to answer any of Dr. Winters' questions. He was scheduled to leave in the morning, and he needed to make sure his business affairs were in order. Although his brain told him to send her away, he didn't.

"Show her in, Alfred," Nikolas said as he stood and came across the front of his desk. As Alfred walked to the front door, Nikolas folded his arm and leaned against his desk. Ready for a fight, Nikolas' body was tense, his face twisted in a scowl. He was ready to listen to all the reasons why Dr. Winters would like him to avoid this trip.

What he wasn't prepared for was Lainey.

Gone was the dark business suit, replaced by faded jeans and a lilac-colored fitted T-shirt. Her bangs were on the verge of touching her eyebrows, and the rest of her hair rested softly on her shoulders. Her sandals gave her enough height to be slightly taller than Nikolas, making him uncomfortable. As she walked toward him, she gave him a shy smile. When she reached him, she placed her hand on his forearm, tugging softly; forcing Nikolas to unfold his arms.

"Relax," she said softly. "I'm not here to tell you not to go. I just want to make sure you are ok. I wanted to see you before you left."

Her hands were soft and gentle. Although she wasn't touching him anymore, Nikolas could still feel her palms tugging on his forearm. His skin tingled from her touch, and Nikolas clinched his teeth as a way to ignore it.

It's been a long time since he was touched by a woman. It's only natural that he would feel this way, he thought.  He wondered if she was as graceful as she looked. If he reached out for her, would she slip away? Turning away from her, he moved to the bar. With his back to her, he asked, "Would you like something to drink?"

Ignoring his formalities, Lainey answered, "Nikolas, what is it? Why are you avoiding me? Have I done something to offend you?"

"No," he said while opening a bottle of water. "I'm just busy, and I don't need the distraction."  At least he was telling the truth, he thought. Her tight shirt and gentle touch was a distraction. His focus should be on Emily; anything else was a distraction, plain and simple.

As he turned to her, he could tell that she was going to say something but decided against it.

"I won't keep you then. I just want to wish you luck and tell you that I'm here if you need me. I'll have my cell phone on, and you know how to reach me at the hospital," she said as she walked towards him with her arms outstretched.

"No," his brain screamed silently.

"Yes," his body prayed in answer.

As she wrapped her arms around him, his brain and body started to battle, and when she kissed him lightly on the cheek, an all-out internal war began.

"Good luck," she whispered in his ear. With a final parting smile, she turned and walked out of the mansion.

Nikolas didn't move until he was sure that she was far away from the house. His body was betraying him, and his brain berated him for letting her in the house. Reaching for the phone, he called to make sure his jet was ready to leave. He needed to focus on what mattered. He couldn't afford to let distractions keep him from his goal. He had to focus on listening to his brain; his body would have to wait.
