Winter of Resentment
Part 11 ~ Yes
by Kimberly 5/21/08
Jason paced across the safe house. He hadn't been this nervous in a long
time, if ever. He stopped pacing to adjust the collar of the pale blue
dress shirt. It wasn't his usual style, but he promised his grandfather
that he would dress for the occasion. That was the least that he could
do considering Edward's eagerness to help. When he heard the rattling of
the keys against the lock, he was relieved, partially at least.
"Jason!" Liz flew into his arms. She was trembling and out of breath.
"I think someone's following me."
"Go into the bedroom and don't come out until I call you. There's a
gun on the top shelf. Keep it with you and use it if you need to. Do you
remember what I taught you at Wyndemere?"
Liz nodded quickly and hurried off.
What would be the odds that today of all days, Jason would have to
get into a gun fight. As he cradled the gun in his hand, he saw a figure
walk past the window towards the front door. Jason walked quickly to the
door. Yanking it open, Jason pointed the gun into Milo's face.
Surprised, Milo stepped back "Whoa, don't shoot."
"What are you doing here?"
"Guarding Ms. Weber." As Jason lowered the gun, Milo moved to the left
to peek inside. It was only then that Jason saw Max.
"And Max, what are you doing here?"
"Guarding you! You know you shouldn't have left the hospital without
a bodyguard. Paul couldn't track you down, so I left him at the Weber
house while we followed Ms. Weber." Max moved to the right to peek
inside. "We thought she might lead us to you. Did she make it here ok?
She gave us the slip about 20 minutes ago."
"Ms. Weber?" Milo yelled from the doorway "Are you ok?"
"Milo?" Liz's voice called from the bedroom.
"Yes, Ms Weber. It's me, Milo."
"Milo." The relief in Liz's voice was evident as she entered the
living room. Jason turned slightly at the sound of her voice, giving
Milo enough room to step into the living room.
"Was that you following me?" she asked.
Milo blushed openly. "Yeah, it was me. Are you ok?"
"I was a little scared, but I'm fine now."
"I'm sorry," Milo stammered. "Is there anything I can do for you?
Anything you need? Can I get something for you?"
"I'll get her anything that she needs." All eyes turned to Jason as
he spoke. The edge in his voice was hard to ignore. He tapped the gun
lightly against his leg. Milo's obvious infatuation with Liz annoyed
him. He would have to do something about it and soon.
Milo made his way to the door. "I'll be right here if you need me."
"No you won't," Jason corrected.
"Of course, I will. I mean, my job is to protect her."
"Are you guarding her from me?"
Milo shrugged his shoulders, and Jason heard Liz giggle in the
background.
"You never know," Milo said as he flashed Liz a
smile.
Jason clinched his teeth together. Before he could move in Milo's
direction, Liz positioned herself in front of him. Facing Milo she said,
"I need to talk to Jason privately. I think for this one night, I'll be
safe. Why don't you and Max go and have a nice dinner. There's a great
Italian restaurant in town. She leaned closer to Milo and smiled. "I mean
with all of those muscles you probably need a lot of energy to keep that
physique."
"Yeah, well....." Milo flexed his muscles underneath his shirt, much to
Jason's annoyance.
Liz could feel the heat radiating from Jason's body. If Milo didn't
leave soon, Liz knew that the atmosphere would turn ugly.
"Why don't you go and have a nice meal and come back later."
"Ok," Milo said as he stepped outside. He nodded goodbye to Jason and
walked towards his car.
"Boss, Ms. Webber. We'll be back shortly," Max stated.
Jason moved quickly. Standing next to Max, he leaned over and
whispered something in his ear. Liz watched Max's face drain of color.
Max nodded quickly and rushed out of the house.
"Do I even want to know what you said to him?"
"No," Jason said bluntly. He walked over to his jacket and placed the
gun in the holster. Jason's chiseled body could not hide underneath the
blue dress shirt which was tucked neatly into his navy blue slacks.
Although Liz noticed the various vases of white roses scattered
throughout the house, it wasn't until she noticed Jason's attire the she
realized tonight was not an ordinary night.
Liz could tell that Jason's mood had turned sour. It was more than
Milo and Max showing up unannounced. Something else was bothering him.
She walked to stand beside him and placed her hand in his.
"I love you," she whispered, She could feel his muscles relax, and he
glanced down at her with a weak smile. Saying nothing, he led her to the
couch. After they were seated, he stared at her for a few minutes.
"Tomorrow morning Sonny will be leaving Port Charles. He'll be
heading off to the island to focus on his physical therapy sessions.
He's asked me to take over."
Jason looked off into the distance before he continued, "I know we
talked about living together, but you need to know what that means now
that my role has changed. It would mean constant bodyguards, security..."
"Isn't that what I have now?" Liz looked up at him, worry etched in
her face. "What are you really trying to say?"
He took a deep breath and looked her in the eyes. "I guess I'm giving
you the option to change your mind." She started to speak but he cut her
off with his next words. "Because if you're going to be with me, it will
have to be as my wife."
The stunned look on Liz's face caused Jason to ramble on. "I know," he
said softly. "I've asked you to marry me twice, and I vowed that I
wouldn't ask again until I was sure that you wanted to be with me and
that you could handle the danger. As my wife, everyone will know how
much you mean to me."
"How much? How much do I mean to you?"
He kissed the back of her hand before speaking. "I can't say when I
first started loving you, but I do know when I started wishing that you
were in love with me. For years, I told myself that you deserve better, and I've
learned to live with just being your friend. All my hopes for us were locked away; a piece of me that I kept hidden. When you showed up
at my door the night of the blackout, all of those feelings resurfaced. I
didn't try to fight those feelings. I didn't want to. I thought that I
would be able to lock them away in the morning." He chuckled softly and
stood. He walked to the mantle and gently touched a rose petal. "Once we
made love, made Jake, I didn't have to wonder anymore. I had a taste of
how great it was to hold you, love you, and wake up with you in the
morning. Sam was right. I lied to her long before the night that we
spent together. I told Sam that I loved her completely. It was the same
thing that I told Courtney, but I knew that there was always a special
place in my heart that was yours, waiting for you to call me to you."
Her turned to her and offered her the sweetest smile she had ever seen.
"So now is the time. I want to give all of my heart to you and only you.
I want a family and a home with you, but I can't make false promises. The
danger is real, and as my wife, the media and your friends and family
will have a lot to say. If you have second thoughts...."
"Stop!" Liz walked over to Jason and kissed him lightly on the lips.
"My friends will support my choices even if they don't agree. My family,"
she shrugged, "my family is now you and the boys."
He kissed her slowly. He had been waiting for her to change her mind
and reject him. He had been waiting for months, years really. Now that
she agreed to be his wife, Jason frowned at the thought. Had she agreed?
Did he even ask? He stepped out of her embrace and reached behind the
vase of white roses sitting on the mantle. The red velvet box felt heavy
in his hand.
"Will you marry me?" Jason opened the lid to display his
grandmother's wedding ring, but Liz didn't look at the ring. She didn't
even glance at it. She didn't care what was on her finger. In her heart
she was already his.
"Yes" she said quickly. "Yes, I'll be your wife."
