"Accidental Autumn"
Part 6 ~ Found
by Kimberly
1/23/10

The sun was starting to set as they reached the small cottage that was built amongst the rolling hills. A small barn was set off to the side. Besides the gentle chirping of birds, the area was quiet. As they drove closer to the house, Jason became aware that something was wrong. If someone was in the house, they would have seen them drive up even when they were miles away. There was no activity within the house, and Jason quickly surmised that they had missed Ian once again. As he heard Nikolas curse under his breath, Jason knew that he wasn't the only one that reached that conclusion. Avoiding the house altogether, Jason headed for the barn. He knew that if the barn was void of vehicles, they had missed another opportunity at finding Emily. As soon as he exited the parked car, Jason could see fresh tire tracks leading to the road. As he knelt down, Spinelli joined him.

"We probably missed him by a few hours."

"Well, then we still have time to catch up," Nikolas said from behind.

"Except we don't know which way they went," Jason replied. "Spinelli, can you see if you can tap into any highway cameras? From the looks of these tracks, they're in a large vehicle, maybe some sort of van. "

"I'll get right on it," Spinelli chirped. "Let's see if there is Internet access at the house."

As Spinelli walked towards the house, Jason stood and examined his surroundings. Except for the white curtain that flapped outside an open window, the house looked picture perfect. He wondered if Liz would like a house like this. The kids would have a ball exploring all the hillsides. He would have to install central air to keep the house cooled, but.......

Jason paused and watched as Spinelli stepped onto the porch and walked towards the front door. As Spinelli passed a large bay window, Jason noticed it.

"Wait!" He screamed at Spinelli as he raced to the house with Lainey and Nikolas close behind. As Jason reached Spinelli, he stepped in front of him.

"What is it?" Lainey asked.

"Look at the house. All the windows are closed except one. Why? It has to be at least 80 degrees. There is no shade, no air conditioning, and no central air. It is dusk and all the lights are off except the one in the room with the open window. Something is not right." Jason stepped forward and gently placed his hand on the door. Without much effort, the door opened.

"Stay here," Jason said as he reached for his gun.

"You'll have to kill me," Nikolas answered.

Jason didn't have time to argue. As he entered the house, Nikolas, Lainey, and Spinelli were right behind him. They looked at each other, and it was clear that they were all thinking the same thing; they had come this far together and they would finish it together.

"Do you hear that?" Spinelli asked as he cocked his head to the side. "It sounds like Mozart."

"Yes, I hear it," Lainey confirmed, "It is coming from upstairs."

That was all Nikolas needed to hear. As he dashed toward the stairs, Jason blocked him. "This may be a trap. I'll go first."

Nikolas clenched his teeth but didn't argue. The staircase was wide enough for Nik and Jason to walk side by side, with Lainey and Spinelli following closely. When they reached the landing, they could hear the music clearly coming from the bedroom at the end of the hall. As they reached the closed bedroom door, Jason gripped his gun tightly. When he reached for the doorknob, Lainey surged forward, forcing Nik behind her.

"Jason," she whispered, "Remember what Robin said."

Jason looked at her and nodded. He glanced behind him at Nikolas and Spinelli. "On three," Jason whispered. "One, two..." When Jason whispered "three," they all rushed into the room together.

There she was sitting up in the bed, as lovely as the last time that they had seen her. Her brown hair was longer and fell in waves past her shoulders. She looked fresh, young and alive.

She heard them coming up the stairs and as they burst into the room, she eyed them suspiciously. At the sight of her, the man with the gun stumbled backwards into the hallway as if he wanted to start all over again. She could see his chest rise and fall in waves. His mouth was parted as if he was about to speak but instead, he stared at her in utter amazement.

At the same time, the lone woman in the group let out a loud whimper and leaned against the wall for support. She closed her eyes tightly and clutched her stomach. Her caramel completion lost its luster, and as she opened her eyes, her mouth said a silent prayer.

The second man to enter had a quizzical look on his face. It was clear that he wasn't sure what to do next or how to process her existence. His confusion looked painful; he turned and looked around the room at the woman and the man with the gun for some kind of direction.

It was when he turned that she saw the third man. She didn't recognize anyone else, but when she saw him, the love she had in her heart fought through her drug-induced state. She loved him and of that, she was certain. As their eyes met, she smiled at him.

He couldn't take his eyes off her. She was beautiful just like he remembered. When she smiled at him, emotions exploded into his chest. All of his silent prayers had been answered and as the emotions coursed through his body, the weight of it forced him to his knees.

On his knees, he struggled to speak, but Spinelli had only enough air in his lungs to shout one thing...."Georgie!"
