Part 7 ~ Positive

Sam looked at the results of the home pregnancy test. Her ironic chuckles turned into heart-wrenching sobs as she crumbled to the bathroom floor.

Lainey looked at her watch when she heard the soft knocking on her office door. Nikolas was prompt as always. As she opened the door, she expected to see the handsome prince. Instead, she saw a walking corpse dressed in the finest attire. Nikolas's eyes were red and heavy from lack of sleep. His skin was pale and looked like it had gone through a rapid aging process. His shoulders sagged from the weight of trying to stay awake.

"Thanks for seeing me on such short notice."

"Nikolas, please sit." Nik sat silently as Lainey continued, "I understand that you are having problems sleeping. Is it that you cannot fall asleep or you do not want to fall asleep?"

Very observant, Nikolas thought. His body had been begging for sleep, but the only thing that sleep would bring is nightmares. The nightmares had gotten so bad that Alexis had to cradle Nikolas in her arms to stop him from trembling.

"These nightmares are so real that I don't think they're nightmares."

Lainey tilted her head slightly. "If they aren't nightmares, what do you think they are?"

"Memories. The doctors told me that the tumor was causing hallucinations, but the tumor is gone now, and the memories are getting frequent and clearer. I need to know what happened to Emily."

"We already know what happened to Emily."

"If my memories are correct, I think we've all been misled. I need to know if these are memories of dreams, otherwise I'll go crazy."

"Do you want to describe some of your dreams?"

"I want to do something better. I want you to hypnotize me. I know you've been trained so I need you to tell me if I'm going crazy."

"Hypnosis should not be taken lightly. It may reveal things your mind is not capable of handling. Are you positive this is what you want to do?"

"I'm positive. Very positive."

"Are you positive?"

This was the tenth time that Alexis asked Kelly the same questions. Kelly smiled at Alexis. "Yes, I'm positive. You are pregnant."

"But," Alexis stammered. "Don't you think I'm a little too old to be....... you know, ahhh, with child?"

"Many women your age are just starting a family."

"I know, but I used protection."

"No protection is 100 percent."

"Well, what am I supposed to do now?"

Kelly could hear the panic creep into Alexis' voice. "Well, why don't you go home, get some rest, and call me once you have time to think this over. Everything will look much better in the morning. You'll see."

Alexis could taste the bile in the back of her throat. As she raced into Kelly's bathroom to empty her stomach, she was sure of one thing. Mac needed to know that he would be having his first child.
