"Spring Flowers"
Part 13 ~ Good Work
by Kimberly 3/22/09
Jax stepped off the elevator into the dark
and empty foyer of the Crimson offices. He missed Kate. He would have
loved to tell her how well things were going with Carly. He shook his
head to help him focus. As he glanced at his watch, he became concerned.
It was ten o'clock in the morning, and Maxie was not in the office.
Strange, Jax thought. Maxie had been a constant fixture in the office
since Kate's death. The only break Maxie took was to visit Robin in the
hospital. Jax smiled to himself. He was glad that baby Emma survived. He
heard that Robin would be going home. Maybe Maxie was at the hospital
helping her cousin. He would call Maxie later in the afternoon and ask
her to meet him at his office. As he turned to leave, he noticed that
Kate's office door was ajar. He pushed the door open further and noticed
a sleeping Maxie on the leather couch. She was still dressed in a mint
green denim dress. A thin brown belt emphasized her small waist and her
expensive brown shoes were dangerously close to falling off her feet.
He walked over to the couch slowly, cautious
not to startle her. "Maxie," he whispered. When she didn't move, he said a
little louder. "Maxie."
She whimpered softly, tucking her feet closer
to her body. Jax kneeled down beside the couch and touched her shoulder.
"Maxie," he whispered in her ear. Her eyes fluttered open, and she smiled
when she saw Jax's face. She stretched for a moment and then went right back
into a curled position. Jax laughed to himself. "Maxie," he said again.
"Yes, Jax," she answered with her eyes
closed. It was clear that she thought she was dreaming. Jax didn't know
whether to be flattered or embarrassed.
"Maxie, get up."
"Huh," she said. When she heard him chuckle,
she realized that she wasn't dreaming. "Oh, God," she said bouncing off the
couch. "I must have dozed off. I didn't mean to sleep on the couch. I didn't
hurt anything, did I? I mean, I don't normally wear shoes on the couch, and
I usually go home after work. I mean, I do have a home, although technically
Mac owns the home."
Jax listened to her babble, and when it
became clear that she was very flustered, he stood and placed his hands on
her shoulders. "Maxie. Maxie. Calm down. I know you've been working very
hard to make sure that the next issue is on time. I'm not angry that you are
here. Although, now that I think about it, I am a little concerned."
"I promise that I'll never do it again. Oh
please, don't fire me."
"Fire you? No, that's not what I had in mind.
As a matter of fact, I'm impressed by your commitment to the magazine."
"Fashion is my life. Crimson means everything
to me. Kate wouldn't have wanted me to postpone the next issue."
"You're right, and all of your hard work has
not gone unnoticed. I'd like to thank you."
"Oh" she blushed "Umm.. you're welcome."
"And I'd like you to work on the next few
issues, at least until I find a replacement for Kate. If you do a good job,
there will be a promotion for you."
Maxie let out a high-pitched scream which
drowned out the opening of the elevator doors. She leaped into Jax's arms
and pitched him back towards the couch. Realizing that he was going to fall,
he braced himself as Maxie tumbled onto the couch with him. "Oh yes, yes
,yes," she repeated in delight. He laughed openly and the mixture of his
laughter and her screams of delight filled the room.
"Oh, my," Spinelli gasped from the doorway.
"I'm sorry" he said bashfully and raced away.
"Spinelli!" Maxie shouted still laying
against Jax on the couch. Leaping off the couch, she ran into the foyer but
found it empty. When she made her way back into the office, Jax was
standing.
"Do you want me to call Spinelli to explain?"
"No, no. Once he thinks about it, I'm sure
he'll realize it was all a misunderstanding."
"So are you up for the challenge?"
"With Spinelli? I know he's a little awkward,
but I wouldn't classify him as a challenge."
"No. I meant the magazine. Are you up for the
challenge of overseeing the magazine?"
"Oh yes, yes, yes." She straightened her
wrinkled dress. "You'll see. I won't disappoint you."
"I know," he assured her, "but no more
sleeping on the couch. I'll reserve a hotel room for you, so you'll have a
place to stay when you work late. Come by my office this afternoon, and I'll
give you the key." He started to walk away but paused and turned to her. He
looked around the office sadly, but when he turned to Maxie he gave her a
bright smile. "It's all yours"
He could still hear her screams of delight as
the elevator closed. Chuckling to himself, he knew he had just made his life
more interesting.
