Part 8 ~ If Only...

"How  did it go with Sonny?" Sam asked as Layla entered the room. 

"Well, I got him to start packing.  He was so convinced that Kate was still alive that Jason's call confirming her death just sent him into a depressed state.  Thank goodness Jason is getting married. It is the only thing that gets him out of bed." Layla watched a pained express settle on Sam's face at the mention of Jason's wedding.  

"I'm so sorry. I didn't mean to upset you," Layla apologized quickly. "You still love him, don't you?" 

Sam's only reply was a weak smile. She never stopped loving Jason, and she never will. It was a horrible twist of fate that Jason saw her and Rick together. If he had never witnessed that, he wouldn't have slept with Liz.  

Sam was convinced that they could have rebuilt their relationship, but she wasn't prepared to compete with Liz's pregnancy. The simple truth was that she underestimated Liz.  She was so busy trying to prove her love to Jason that she didn't even realize that Liz was manipulating  everyone around her. Liz used her pregnancy to move her and Lucky out of the picture, leaving Jason free and clear for the taking.  She was so surprised by Jason's attachment to Liz that Sam turned desperate, making decisions that pushed Jason further away. 

It doesn't matter now, she thought bitterly. Even if Jason realized his love for her, he would never come to love her baby. Regardless of the event surrounding her pregnancy, she knew that abortion was out of the question. It was a horrible thing to have to choose between the love of your life and the love of your child. 

She left the room quickly as the tears paraded down her cheek. Heading towards the beach, Sam tried to reassure herself that if Jason loved her, he would find his way back to her. If only she could make him realize his true feelings.

If only...
