Part 3 ~ In the Way

Lainey spotted a glimpse of Jason entering the staircase to the parking lot. She turned and looked into her office at Nikolas. He had finally calmed down. The sedative was taking effect. After giving the nurse instructions to ensure that Nik would not harm himself, Lainey rushed off in the direction of the parking lot. She knew she wouldn't catch up to Jason in her expensive pumps. Throwing her pumps into the corner of the staircase, Lainey raced down several flights. Although she worked out five times a week, Lainey was still winded by the time she reached Jason. Grasping his arm didn't break Jason's stride, and Lainey had to jog to keep up with him.

"Jason!" she screamed. When he didn't reply, she dug her nails into his flesh "Jason! Please!"

He stopped and turned toward her. Still grasping his right arm, she was too scared to let go. "Jason please, I can't let you go off and do something dangerous." She watched his jaw clinch. She could feel his muscles tighten as he balled his hand into a fist. "Please come back to my office, and we can discuss this," she continued.

"What's to discuss?" he said softly "Someone has my sister, and I'm going to get her back."

"We don't know enough yet."

"I know what I need to know." As he removed her hand from his arm, he paused. "Go back to Nik. He'll need you." As she reached out to him, he slowly shook his head, letting her know that their conversation was done. She had no doubt that he would remove anyone that stood in his way, including her. She found herself shivering in the spring heat as she watched Jason ride off on his motorcycle. Someone was going to die, and she had no idea how to stop it.

"You look forlorn. May I sit?" Spinelli asked.

Maxie moved to make room for Spinelli. As he sat next to her on the park bench, he glanced towards the stairs were he found Georgie's body. They sat silently for a while before Spinelli whispered, "I'm sorry."

Maxie shrugged. "It's ok. I guess I'll always have the reputation of home wrecker."

"Your friends shouldn't judge you. I'm sorry that I did. Forgive me?"

She smiled openly. Besides Sam, Spinelli was her only true friend. "You know I can't stay mad at you."

He relaxed against the back of the bench. Before he could respond, his cell phone rang. It was Jason. He wanted Spinelli to meet him at the penthouse. The tone of Jason's voice let Spinelli know that this was a serious matter. Smiling at Maxie, he took her hand and kissed it lightly. "I have to go. Promise me you'll have dinner with me soon."

"I promise," she stated. Her smile started to fade as she watched Spinelli scuttle out of the park. Working for Jason could get him killed. She didn't know what she would do without him.

"Don't worry. Jason would never let anything happen to him."

Maxie glanced behind her to see Johnny leaning against a tree. His blue jeans and faded blue T-shirt looked comfortable against his skin. Her pulse quickened as he sat next to her. "I was going to take a ride up to the mountains. Do you want to join me?"

"I don't think so." She watched him frown as she said the words. She knew that if she was alone with him, she'd be tempted to kiss him and that would only lead to more, much more. "I'm sorry." She stood and walked away without looking back.

Johnny watched her walked away and for the first time he knew that it was going to take more than his boyish smile to get what he wanted. He didn't want anything as much as he wanted her, and nothing was going to stand in the way.
