"Accidental Autumn"
Part 4 ~ End Game

Patience has never been one of Nikolas' greatest virtues. He was spoiled as a child and waiting was not an activity for a prince. Nikolas straightened his cuffs as he stood on the hotel balcony. Like any other city, Madrid was busy. Although he was on the 12th floor, Nikolas could make out the sounds of traffic and the arrival of the businessmen and women as they made their way to work. He welcomed the noise. It helped to distract him from his thoughts of Emily. He needed to find her alive and healthy. He wasn't prepared for any other outcome. He closed his eyes and Emily's face surfaced. He longed to touch her and love her.

Spinelli has been on his laptop for the last five hours. Jason has been tracking down leads in the city, and Lainey has been on the phone with Robin and Liz trying to put together the medical pieces of the puzzle. Everyone was doing their best. Everyone, except him. Distracted, Nikolas tugged at his cuffs. He didn't know what to do. He didn't know where to start. He felt helpless and wished he had taken the time to hire private detectives to help in the search. If he did, maybe Ian wouldn't always be one step ahead of them. Nikolas heard the door open and Jason giving orders.

"I've found him. He's in a farmhouse located in a small town about 30 miles away. If we leave now, we may be able to catch him before he moves again."

Nik didn't need any more prompting. He walked straight out of the suite and towards the elevator. Without turning around, Nik could hear Spinelli packing his laptop. It was only when Spinelli and Nik left the room that Lainey spoke.

"Jason, I spoke to Robin, and she's a little concerned about Ian's past activities.  It seems that Ian has been working with experimental drugs that are known to have very dangerous side effects."

"What kind of side effects?"

"Aggression, mood swings, homicidal tendencies. We need to be very careful if we actually find Emily. Robin suggested that we try not to make Emily feel as though she's in a trapped situation." As Jason nodded in understanding, Lainey continued, "Do you really think we are close to finding Ian?"

"Yes, he hasn't made any moves to cover his tracks. Either he is very comfortable here or he wants us to find him. Either way, it is time to end this game."

Jason and Lainey joined Spinelli and Nik in the car. As they drove out of Madrid, they each became lost in their own silence. They had reached the end game, and as much as they tried to prepare themselves, they would all fall apart at what they found next.
