Part 7 ~ Welcome to Hell

"I need to know what you are doing to find my daughter."

Mac looked up from his paperwork to find Alexis hovering over his desk. If she wasn't so arrogant, she'd be attractive, Mac thought.

"We're doing all we can. We just don't have any leads. We've interviewed all of Diego's old friends and teachers. We have nothing."

"Well, you've obviously missed something."

"Obviously," Mac said dryly. "Are you here to give me more insight?"

"Look," Alexis braced her hands on her hips. "You've got a killer running around. I find it hard to believe that the PCPD can't come up with one solid lead. I guess Sam's body will have to be discarded like garbage before you'll do anything."

The words flew out of her mouth and when she looked into his eyes, she saw the pain of a father who just lost his daughter.

"Mac, I..." she started.

He stood abruptly. "Alexis, I'll give you more info when I have it." He left her standing there before she could apologize.

Sonny didn't need PCPD to tell him where Diego was hiding. Every warehouse on the docks had an underground escape route. There was no doubt in Sonny's mind that Diego was hiding out in one of the vacant underground rooms. Sonny walked aimlessly through the corridors until he noticed a door with a new lock. As he jiggled the handle, he heard whimpering. Sonny stepped back from the door and fired a shot into the lock. Kate's death left Sonny numb, otherwise he would have been disturbed by what he saw when he pushed the door open. Sam lay naked, handcuffed, blindfolded and gagged on a small bed. Although she could not see him, she whimpered as she heard his footsteps approaching. He reached out to remove the blindfold. As her eyes adjusted to the light, she could make out Sonny's face. Realizing that he was not Diego, Sam started to cry. As he removed the gag from her mouth, her sobs echoed in the bare room.

"Shhh..." Sonny whispered as he shrugged off his coat and placed it over her naked body. The handcuffs were looped over a metal rung attached to the wall. He knew that he didn't have time to look for the key.

"Sam, I'm going to have to shoot into the cuffs in order to free you. I'm going to need you to be very still."

Sonny turned his gun toward the links of the handcuff. The bullet tore through the metal. Although the handcuffs looked like gaudy bracelets on her wrist, Sam was thankful that she was finally free. Slipping her arms into the sleeves of the coat, Sonny guided her out of the room.

"I was expecting Jason, but I guess you'll do." Diego sneered from behind.

At the sound of Diego's voice, Sonny pushed Sam towards the exit. That simple act saved Sonny's life. The bullet meant for Sonny's temple grazed his forehead instead.

"Run!" Sonny screamed at Sam.

Sonny heard Diego fire another shot. The searing pain in Sonny's back was proof that Diego didn't miss. As his legs collapsed beneath him, Sonny turned and emptied his gun in Diego's chest. Diego stumbled backward and collapsed against the wall.

Sonny closed his eyes and waited for death to arrive. He never believed in heaven, but he knew that living without Kate was going to be pure hell.

Sonny had no idea where he was when he opened his eyes and saw Robin smiling down at him. "It's over now, Sonny. You're going to make it."

Sonny turned his head to stare at the lights. Welcome to hell, he thought.
