Part 6 ~ Complete Surrender

As his cheek touched the side of the winged back armchair, the coolness of the leather startled him awake. He had been sitting there for hours waiting for Maxie to make her exit. He let her get away once, but he was prepared this time. If she tried to sneak out in the middle of the night, Johnny was prepared to catch her in the act and humiliate her until he was sure that he hurt her as bad as she hurt him.

His mind drifted to the evening that they spent together. Maxie insisted on cooking, so they walked to the local farmer's market. With bags in hand, they finally made it to his apartment. Uncorking a bottle of wine, they both set themselves to the task of making Eggplant Parmesan. By the time the meal was done, they had finished one bottle of wine and were working on another. As Johnny set the table, Maxie walked up from behind him and wrapped her arms around his waist. She kissed the back of his neck as she pressed her palm against his abs. Dropping the silverware on the table, he turned to face her. Her eyes danced with mischief and Johnny found himself smiling before he kissed her. They would never find out how the meal tasted, because the next few hours were filled with playfulness and lovemaking. As Maxie drifted off to sleep, Johnny found that he couldn't surrender to dreams, not when he thought she wouldn't be there when he woke up.

Rubbing the palms of his hand across his eyes, Johnny willed himself to stay awake. As he struggled to keep from slouching in the oversized chair, he glanced at the sleeping form in the bed. Her arm was flung carelessly across her breast and the sheet barely covered her hips, leaving too much skin exposed. Her legs surfaced from under the sheet and teetered dangerously close to the edge of the bed. Johnny let his eyes linger on the sheet silently, willing it to slip off and expose all of her. He was surprised when the sheet slid below her navel. Glancing at her face he noticed that she was smiling at him.

"What are you doing in that chair?" she chuckled. "There's more room over here."

Johnny fought to hang onto his mission. He wanted to be angry. He needed to be angry. Anger was a familiar feeling. Any other feeling would be too scary for him to deal with. Clinching his teeth together, he made a mental list of hurtful things he could say to her.

"I just wanted to make sure you didn't leave without saying goodbye," he scolded.

Propping herself on her elbow, she looked at him. She let her eyes linger on his naked form. "I have no intention of saying goodbye. Not tonight or any other night unless.." She slid the sheet off of her hips. "You've got something else you'd rather be doing."

She smiled at him as an invitation, but Johnny refused to let the anger go. If she wanted to make love again, he would do it on his terms. He would have sex with her and then tell her to leave in the crudest manner he could muster. The thought spurred him to action, and he got back in the bed so quickly that Maxie giggled. Snatching the sheet from her body, he threw it on the floor. He grabbed her by the arm and pulled her on top of him. Molding herself against him, she whispered his name before she kissed him. He fought to hang on to the anger, but as she buried her hands in his hair he surrendered slowly and completely, and for the first time in years, he felt complete.
