Freak of the Week: Justin Gaines
(Adam Brody) is an old friend of Chloe Sullivan (Allison
Mack) and a former Smallville High cartoonist. He was hit by a car
and spend months in hospital, but made a complete recovery, except for
the use of his hands. He know feels useless, since his main talent was
drawing. However, during his recovery, in order to compensate for the
loss of his hands, Justin has learned to move things with his mind. As he
is being discharged from the hospital, his doctor visits him. The doctor
is insensitive and does not show any concern about Justin's hands,
instead he advises him to just change his career focus. As the doctor
leaves the hospital with his wife, Justin causes the elevator to crash.
While the doctor's wife manages to escape and then to try and pull her
husband out, the elevator drops again, severing the doctor's hands and
dropping to the ground.
Justin returns to Smallville High, where he starts dating Chloe. He
confesses to her that he is able to move things with his mind. He meets
Clark Kent (Tom Welling), who is
immediately suspicious of him, after seeing an article about the doctor's
death in Justin's file. Since Chloe is dating him, all her journalistic
instincts and objectivity disappears. He tells her about his accident,
where he only remembers the car driving away and seeing part of the
license plate "DDI". Chloe's contact at the DMV sends her a fax with a
match, but Justin grabs the fax before Chloe notices. The match is that
of Principal Kwan's (Hiro
Kanagawa) car. Justin kills the principal by moving the car with his
mind and crushing Principal Kwan. When Clark visits the scene the
following day, he meets the principal's son Danny who confesses he was
the one to have caused Justin's hit-and-run. Danny feels guilty for his
father's death, and Clark encourages him to turn himself in.
Chloe refuses to believe that Justin could be the cause of this, until
she finds Justin's file, that contains a complete comic strip description
of both the doctor's and Principal Kwan's accidents. Justin realizes that
she knows, and follows her to Clark's barn. Justin attempts to kill her,
but Clark confronts him and knocks him out. He is sent to a psychiatric
hospital.
Character Development: Chloe asked
Clark to book to tickets for them at the Metropolis Journalist
Convention, but Clark forgot because he was hanging out with Lana Lang (Kristin
Kreuk). Clark does not understand when Chloe storms off. Pete Ross (Sam
Jones III) makes him understand that Chloe has a crush on him and
that it hurts her every time Clark speaks of Lana. Clark does not know how
to behave around Chloe, which is why she is so eager to date Justin when
he returns.
Clark confides in Lana, and explains to her that he has been in this
situation before, where he did not pursue any romantic leads because he
did not want to ruin the friendship (of course, he was talking of Lana
herself, and she understood that). He feels like he does not want to miss
his chance this time with Chloe, and Lana herself encourages him to go
ahead, later even asking him about his progress.
Lana is getting a lot of attention from her boyfriend Whitney Fordman (Eric
Johnson), whose father is feeling better, and Whitney is making up
for lost time with Lana. Unfortunately, a few days later, Whitney's
father dies, and all the kids attend his funeral. While Lana attempts to
comfort him, Clark gives her long, caring stares, that Chloe picks up on
and that only throw her faster into Justin's arms.
Lex Luthor (Michael Rosenbaum)
visits his mother Lilian's grave, which we see is a huge memorial in
Metropolis. She died in 1993. There, Lex runs into his old nanny Pamela,
whom he is angry with, because he feels she deserted him after his
mother's death. She explained that she always loved him as her own, but
it was Lionel Luthor (John Glover)
who sent her away. She returned to Metropolis to ask for financial help,
as she is dying of cancer. Later, Lex comes around and reconciles with
Pamela.

Notes:Last appearance of Hiro Kanagawa as Principal Kwan.
Smallville's "Mayor Siegel" is an in-joke reference to
Jerry Siegel, co-creator of Superman. The mention here will generate a
goof down the road in "Ryan"
when we are introduced to long-time incumbent Mayor Tate.
In yet another odd "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" parallel,
the high school principal is killed in the first season. Long-time Buffy
fans may remember that in the first season of that show, Principal Flutie
was killed by feral students...
About 11 minutes into the episode, Chloe complements
Justin on her "favorite" comic strip of his. If you look closely, you can
see it's some kind of muscular duck-esque super-hero type in a blue suit
with the famous "S" on the chest. You get a another split-second shot of
this character shortly after when Justin drops his file to the ground.
This episode re-aired on July 22th, 2003. This was the
last week Smallville aired on Tuesdays at 9:00 PM. On the following week,
Smallville began airing on Wednesdays at 8:00 PM starting on July 30th.
The Daily Planet takes high-school interns? Speaking as a
former journalism student...yeah, right. :) You're lucky to get in as a
college intern with any kind of big-city newspaper.
Lana says she caught some of Clark and Chloe fighting at
the career fair. She wasn't there, and even if she was she certainly
wasn't anywhere near the scene where they were fighting.
Clark says that the fax came in at 4:43 p.m. the day
before. We say that scene earlier, and it was just before the bell rang
and students started coming out of the classrooms. At 4:43 in a Kansas
high school? Don't think so. Season Two -
