Freak of the Week: Three candidates
are running for president at Smallville High, Paul Chan, the most
qualified, but not so popular kid; Felice, the popular, head cheerleader
who throws fancy parties to encourage people to vote for her, and Sasha
(Shonda Farr), a hard worker, but who doesn't really have leadership
potential. Strangely, Paul gets attacked by a sworn of bees in his
bathroom and ends up in hospital. Pete Ross (Sam
Jones III) volunteers Clark Kent (Tom
Welling) for president. Clark first thinks of withdrawing, but
reconsiders after his parents, Jonathan (John
Schneider) and Martha Kent (Annette
O'Toole) encourage him. He is further convinced to remain in the race
when he feels Sasha is over-eager for him to quit.
She runs her campaign from a barn near her house. When she entered, she
is surrounded by bees who seem to respond to her and respect her. To make
her feel better after a tough day, they even buzz into a formation of her
face. Chloe Sullivan (Allison Mack)
does some investigating and finds that beekeepers from all over the state
have found their hives empty, the bees colonies having just deserted
them, which is out of character for bees.
Sasha encourages Felice to drop out. Later, Principal Kwan (Hiro
Kanagawa) finds Felice being attacked by bees in her car, and is sent
to hospital, where she remained in a coma. Clark related the two
accidents to Sasha's accident a year ago, where she was stung by bees. He
believes she may have found a way to control them after that. Sasha
requests Clark to drop out. When he refuses and lets her know that he is
onto her, she sends the bees to The Talon, where Clark is working on his
president speech with Lana. He saves Lana from the bees and freezes them.
Chloe finds out that she must be emitting the queen bee pheromone, that
she must have received after her accident last year, where she was stung
by bees near a meteor crater. But Clark remarks that if she starts
loosing it, then the bees will turn against her. He tries to get Sasha to
quit, but she explains that she can't due to pressure by her parents. She
sends bees to attack Martha, but Clark saves his mother from them. When,
in a final confrontation, Sasha starts becomes hysterical, the bees go to
attack her, but Clark saves her and blows up the barn.
Sasha and Felice both drop out, and Paul Chan, who is still in hospital,
wins the race.
Character Development: Lex Luthor (Michael
Rosenbaum) meets Keri Castle, who wants to do an interview on him,
claiming it will be honest, fair and accurate to change his image. He
lets himself get persuaded, but she paints a very negative picture. She
refuses to change the story, so he bribes her with a promotion and she
accepts.
Lex is the one that comes up with Clark's presidential slogan, "The Man
of Tomorrow". Lex reveals to Clark that he had also run for president and
won, although for less noble reasons. Lex also tells Clark that one day,
he wants to become President of the USA.
The Talon is loosing customers to The Beanery, Lana's competition. After
having tried all types of promotional efforts, Lex advices her to "go to
the mattresses", and she digs up some information on The Beanery,
including some health violations they were trying to cover up. Chloe
prints the story, and business is again as usual at The Talon.

Notes: Clark's slogan, "The Man of Tomorrow", is of course a
common nickname for Superman in the comics.
Although Pete Ross mentions not having any political aspirations, in the
comics he is elected to the office of Vice-President - he is Lex Luthor's
running mate.
"Shuster's Gorge" is an in-joke reference to Joe Shuster, the co-creator
of Superman.
Lots of little in-jokes referring to Lex becoming President in the comic
books.
Clark (as Superman) did become President of the United States in
Superman: Man of Steel Annual 1 in 1991. It was in an alternate universe.
After this episode aired in Dallas, the WB33 station interviewed the cast
about the final 3 episodes of the season. Mind reading and a tornado were
mentioned by the cast.
With this episode WB started airing brief promos for the season finale,
"Tempest", with the "Smallville" logo across a stormy sky and the words
"The Storm is Coming".
Whitney only appears briefly in this episode, in a non-speaking role at a
table in the Talon when Lana is talking about the baseball team.
Hiro Kanagawa only gets a single line or two of dialogue, but an upfront
credits listing. Nice work if you can get it!
Shonda Farr ("Sasha") and Sam Jones III ("Pete") appeared together in the
same episode of C.S.I.: Crime Scene Investigation titled "Evaluation
Day."
The candidate Paul, in the scene at his home before the opening credits,
is seen to be making a poster with his face on a "Superman" body. The
slogan says "Paul will fight for you." This is probably in reference to
the Smallville Crow, who also wears a "Superman" suit, but still, in this
show, it's all about the "S"
Doesn't Sasha have any parents? Her shack blows up, less than 50 feet
from the house. And Clark just hauls her right off to the hospital or
wherever surviving krypto-mutants get taken to. Even if Sasha's parents
aren't there (and according to a later episode school in Smallville gets
out after 4:30 in the afternoon - so where are they?), you'd think they'd
wonder about Clark and his involvement, what happened to their girl, etc.
Guess they couldn't afford two more actors this episode.
The shack blows sky-high but doesn't even singe Clark's clothes-- nor
Sasha's clothes. (possible answer: I think they've established, or are
trying to establish, that Clark's clothes (and someone close to him) gain
some of his invulnerability (kinda like in the post-Crisis version).
We've seen other episodes where Clark's clothes are unharmed (when he
saves Whitney in "Metamorphosis") so at least they're consistent here...
:) )
When Sasha confronts Clark in his barn, she sends the bees after his
mother, saying "you may have tough skin, but your mother doesn't." Yet
there is no indication whatsoever that Sasha knows he has tough skin, as
the only time he mentions it is to Lana, joking saying "I have tough
skin" when she asks how he didn't get stung. Also, the method by which he
killed the bees probably wasn't published, since he used coolant to
freeze the bees. So, how did Sasha know? Season Two -
