  • FOX CLASS IS BACK IN SESSION WHEN “ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5TH GRADER?” RETURNS TO FOX
Acclaimed Comedian Jeff Foxworthy Returns As Host
FOX is bringing back the popular and critically praised quiz show ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADER? for another season on FOX. Executive-produced by Mark Burnett, the show features comedian Jeff Foxworthy, who returns as host.
“ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADER? shares so much DNA with the FOX brand that it feels only natural to return it to the schedule – it’s smart, witty, irreverent and it turns the adult/child power dynamic upside-down,” said Simon Andreae, Executive Vice President, Alternative Programming, Fox Broadcasting Company. “All of the core components of the classic format will be there, but we are also adding new twists that make it fresher and more fun for viewers.”
“I have loved this competition from our first show and the timing couldn't be better for 5th GRADER to return to FOX, as there is nothing like it on television,” added Burnett. “Kids today are smarter than ever and the adults who try to take them on will have an even harder task ahead of them.”
Unlike the typical game show that measures intelligence, ARE YOU SMARTER THAN A 5th GRADER? tests adults’ lack of knowledge – as revealed by how much they’ve forgotten since their grammar school days, proving that older doesn’t always mean wiser. Grown-ups will again find themselves in a classroom setting, revisiting their youth, as they tackle subjects they’ve already been taught, ranging from art to geography and math to social studies.

Sam Hodiak (David Duchovny, “Californication,” “The X-Files”) starts asking around. He soon discovers that the hippie kids he’s questioning don’t take kindly to cops, especially a cop with hair as short as his.
Needing the help of someone to trust, he partners with young undercover cop Brian Shafe (Grey Damon, “True Blood,” “Friday Night Lights”), a law-abiding officer who struggles with his own demons. As the lives of Will (Hugh Dancy), Jack (Laurence Fishburne, “The Matrix,” “CSI”) and Alana (Caroline Dhavernas, “Wonderfalls,” “The Pacific”) converge toward Hannibal again, their deadly dance turns in startling and unexpected ways, and nothing will ever be the same again.

PILOT FOR SERIES BASED ON LEV GROSSMAN’S INTERNATIONAL BEST SELLING NOVELS TO BEGIN FILMING THIS DECEMBER IN NEW ORLEANS
NEW YORK – November 6, 2014 – Syfy and Universal Cable Productions have cast Stella Maeve (Chicago PD), Hale Appleman (Teeth) and Arjun Gupta (Nurse Jackie) in key roles for the upcoming pilot The Magicians, an adaptation of Lev Grossman’s beloved #1 New York Times best-selling book series, which begins production in New Orleans this December. Acclaimed independent film producer Mike Cahill (I Origins, Another Earth) is signed on to direct.
Stella Maeve will play the beautiful and confident Julia, a wealthy and brilliant Ivy-Leaguer who seems destined for success. But Julia’s future plans are forever altered after she is denied admittance to the mysterious Brakebills College for Magical Pedagogy. Unaccustomed to failure, Julia finds life meaningless now that the possibilities of a previously unseen magical world have been denied to her. But she may get another chance to pursue a career in magic when she’s recruited by a secret society. Maeve can currently be seen in a recurring role on the NBC series Chicago PD. She most recently starred in the independent features Dark Summer opposite Keir Gilchrist, All Together Now, which premiered at the Los Angeles Film Festival, and Independent Spirit Award-winner Starlet. Previously, Maeve co-starred with Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart in The Runaways. Maeve is repped by Paradigm Agency and Principato-Young Entertainment.
Hale Appleman will portray Eliot, a student at the Brakebills who is an odd combination of a preppy with intrinsic coolness. Effortlessly hip, with his air of self-possession, Eliot is accustomed to commanding any clique, and he’s a natural leader of his fellow magical students. He will prove a sometimes frustrating ally in Quentin’s fortunes -- and may soon factor into a series of perilous adventures. Appleman played Tobey Cobb in the 2007 film Teeth. He made his film debut in Chad Lowe’s feature Beautiful Ohio, and portrayed cartoonist Judd Winick in Pedro, Nick Oceano’s 2008 film dramatizing the life of AIDS educator Pedro Zamora. He also recurred on NBC's Smash. His theater credits include Alex Timbers’ The Last Goodbye, which was at the Old Globe in San Diego, and Streamers on Broadway. He is represented by Innovative Artists and D2 Management.
Arjun Gupta will portray Penny, a young man with an edgy look and attitude. He’s deliberately intimidating to Quentin, his new roommate and fellow magic student at Brakebills. A reluctant telepath, he is bedeviled by voices that hint at pathways to other worlds. Gupta played Sam in the first three seasons of Nurse Jackie opposite Edie Falco, and currently recurs on ABC’s How to Get Away With Murder. Gupta is repped by Gersh and Untitled Entertainment.
The Magicians, produced by Universal Cable Productions, follows 20-somethings who, while studying magic in New York, discover that the magical fantasy world they read about as children is all too real and poses grave danger to humanity. John McNamara (Prime Suspect) and Sera Gamble (Supernatural) will write the script, with Michael London (Milk) as producer. Production on the pilot is set to start this December in New Orleans.

Dallas Roberts (“Dallas Buyers Club”) and Clifton Collins Jr. (“Pacific Rim”) Are Set to Star in the Drama From CBS Television Studios and Universal Cable Productions
UNIVERSAL CITY, Calif. – USA Network announced the pilot pick-up of the CBS Television Studios and Universal Cable Productions drama EVIL MEN, starring Dallas Roberts (“Dallas Buyers Club”) and Clifton Collins Jr. (“Pacific Rim”). The pilot is from writer and executive producer Daniel Taplitz (“Breakin’ All the Rules”). Gary Fleder (“Life Unexpected”), Eric and Kim Tannenbaum (“Two and a Half Men”) and Mary Beth Basile (“October Road”) also serve as executive producers. Fleder is set to direct.
“This supernatural drama is a symbolic tale of good versus evil set in the everyday modern world,” said Jackie de Crinis, Executive Vice President Original Programming, USA Network, "It is a highly relatable story that begs the question of just how far we would go to protect our families."
EVIL MEN follows an upstanding, middle-class family man whose life is turned upside down when he is approached by a frighteningly powerful entity and commanded to kill “evil men” or see his family – along with his city – utterly destroyed. However, the gleeful psycho who is meant to be his first target, instead begins teaching him how to carry out his new destiny.
Roberts takes on the role of Harry Killas, the good husband and loving father who is tasked with an unthinkable mandate by the mysterious and vengeful supernatural force. Collins will play Lazlo Kirk, the profoundly evil former war criminal with magnetic charm and a deep, unpredictable violent streak, who forces himself into Harry's life on a twisted mission of personal redemption.
EVIL MEN is the fifth drama pilot to be picked up by USA this season, joining Carlton Cuse’s (“Bates Motel”) COLONY, starring Josh Holloway (“Lost”) and Sarah Wayne Callies (“The Walking Dead”); MR. ROBOT from Anonymous Content (“True Detective”), starring Christian Slater (“The Adderall Diaries”) and Rami Malek (“24”); Universal Cable Production’s STANISTAN, starring Jennifer Carpenter (“Dexter”); and QUEEN OF THE SOUTH based on the international best seller “La Reina del Sur” starring Alice Braga (“City of God”).

He wields his skills as a weapon to protect the people that he cares about. Elliot will find himself in the intersection between a cybersecurity firm he works for and the underworld organizations that are recruiting him to bring down corporate America.

  • NBC Buys ‘Wizard Of Oz’ Drama From Matt Arnold As Frank Baum’s Classic Becomes The Hottest TV Property This Season
EXCLUSIVE: A century after the release of L. Frank Baum’s Wizard Of Oz series, the books have become the toast of this TV development season. NBC just nabbed Emerald City, an Oz-themed drama from Siberia creator/showrunner Matthew Arnold. Two weeks ago, CBS put in development Dorothy, a medical soap inspired by the characters and themes from The Wizard of Oz. I hear there is another Oz drama making the rounds from Heroes alums Adam Armus and Nora Kay Foster, with Heroes creator Tim Kring supervising. And just last month, Syfy picked up for development a miniseries titled Warriors Of Oz from director Timur Bekmambetov, a fantasy-action reimagining of the classic story. The great interest in Wizard Of Oz is not entirely unexpected as the title has been getting a lot of attention in conjunction with the upcoming 75th anniversary of the classic 1939 feature, which will include a 3D re-release of the Judy Garland starrer. It also comes on the heels of the success of Oz The Great And Powerful earlier this year.
Emerald City, which Arnold is writing and executive producing through Universal Television, is described as a dark reimagining of the classic tale of Oz in the vein of Game Of Thrones, drawing upon stories from Baum’s original 14 books. Following the success of the 1900 The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, Baum wrote 13 sequel novels. Emerald City reunites Arnold with NBC, which acquired his mystery drama series Siberia that had been financed independently and sold internationally before finding a U.S. home on NBC as a summer series. Arnold wrote and directed the pilot and the season finale. He also co-wrote three additional episodes and directed seven of the first season’s 13 episodes. Arnold, repped by ICM Partners, David Engel at Circle Of Confusion and attorney Jennifer Levy, recently wrote and directed the supernatural thriller feature Shadow People.

  • Dynasty Set To Return on Big Screen
TV Series Creators Plan Movie Reboot
Somewhere in the world there is an episode of Dynasty airing right now.
More than 30 years after its creation, the iconic nighttime soap opera still resonates with audiences, so show creators Richard and Esther Shapiro are following the trend set by the big screen remakes of series like Sex and the City, The A-Team, Charlie’s Angels, Starsky & Hutch and the planned 21 Jump Street film by rebooting Dynasty as a new film franchise.
“The time is right,” said Esther Shapiro, co-creator of the series with her husband Richard. “Nostalgia has always been big, but we want to take it a step further. We want to go back to the beginning with these characters and use the film to trace their roots. We’re taking Blake Carrington back to his young manhood and when he met Alexis, and setting the movie in the Mad Men era of the 1960s. It will give us the opportunity to start fresh, without the constraints that television placed on our characters in the series.”
