  • ABC BRINGS ISRAEL’S TOP RATED REALITY SERIES “RISING STAR” TO U.S. FROM KESHET DCP
Set For Summer 2014 - ABC has ordered 10 episodes of the highly sought-after Israeli format “Rising Star” from Keshet DCP, the joint venture between Keshet International (KI), the global distribution and production arm of Keshet Media Group, and DC Media, the parent company of dick clark productions (dcp). Keshet DCP was formed to leverage Keshet’s globally successful unscripted business with DC Media’s expansive U.S. infrastructure and production expertise. The singing competition for ABC will mark the company’s first foray into the market since its formation in October. The show is slated for Summer 2014.
“Rising Star,” produced by Tedy Productions for Keshet Broadcasting, made a record-breaking debut on Israel’s Channel 2 this fall and keeps breaking records with a 49.4 percent share, having almost half of all TV audiences tuning into the show. The show has far outperformed all second screen data ever recorded in Israel, with a participation rate 10 times higher than previous shows, and is maintaining high ratings and conversion rates (viewers to second screen participation) of over 30 percent.
The format has already sold to numerous territories, including France, Germany, Italy and Russia, and interest continues to grow worldwide, with ABC beating out several competitors for the U.S. market.
“Rising Star” completely reinvents the traditional singing competition as--for the first time ever--the audience has the final say in real time. The show follows a group of aspiring singers as they audition in live performances. During the performances, viewers vote via an App in real time to determine if the singer will advance in the competition. If the voting reaches a certain threshold, the performer moves on, and the performer can see how the voting is going during the performance, so the feedback is immediate and dramatic.

  • Prime Instant Video Greenlights Five Additional Kids Pilots
Amazon Originals expands to include titles for kids ages 6-11
Viewer response will help determine which pilots go into full-season production to air exclusively on Prime Instant Video
Pilots join kids shows Annebots, Creative Galaxy and Tumbleaf— Amazon Originals already in full series production
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--(NASDAQ: AMZN)—Following the positive response to its first set of TV pilots, Amazon Studios today announced it will produce five more original pilots for kids, including the first pilots for ages 6-11. The new pilots come from Emmy Award-winning creators as well as a Hollywood newcomer discovered though Amazon Studios’ open-door submission process. The pilots will stream on Amazon Instant Video and LOVEFiLM in the U.K. for customers to watch, provide feedback, and help determine which shows should be produced as series.
“We're very excited to be able to introduce these five original ideas and their talented creators to Amazon customers. After the success of our first pilots, we look forward to getting lots more fantastic feedback from kids and parents,” said Roy Price, Director of Amazon Studios. “For the first time we are offering live-action and animated programming for older children and continuing with entertaining, educational programming for preschool aged children—it’s going to be a lot of fun.”
“I’ve been dreaming up funny adventures for Gortimer Gibbon for as long as I can remember and it’s incredibly thrilling to be working with Amazon to bring these tales to life,” said David Anaxagoras, creator of Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street, one of the new pilots now in production. “With the unique open-door submission process that Amazon Studios offers writers like me, I’ve been given a chance to make my stories come to life. Instead of trying to ‘break through’ and get noticed in the traditional Hollywood process, Amazon has helped bring Hollywood to me and that’s exciting.”
“Working through the pilot process with Amazon Studios has been a fantastic experience,” said Josh Selig, creator of The Jo B. & G. Raff Show as well as The Wonder Pets and Small Potatoes. “Coming up with shows for kids that will not only entertain them but help them learn and grow is a very rewarding experience. We are so excited to hear what Amazon parents and kids think of our show. We hope Jo B. and G. Raff will be back with a full season of stories very soon.”

In the sitcom, Lopez will portray a man who struggles to balance his demanding ex-wife, his 11-year-old son, his overbearing mother who just moved in, and his uncle, as well as his new role as a philanthropist "giving back" by teaching history once a week at a night school.
"George Lopez is an incredibly gifted actor-producer and one of the most talented comedians in the business," said Saftler. "The 10/90 model requires a unique individual who has the ability to pull off this kind of daunting schedule. George is that guy and we couldn't be happier that he chose FX as the home for his new project. We've had a great experience working with Kevin Beggs and his team at Lionsgate as well as with Mort Marcus and Ira Bernstein at Debmar-Mercury, and are thrilled to expand that relationship."
Lopez said, "I'm excited about my new show, couldn't think a better group of people or better place to create than FX.....Now to get ready... Back to Pilates!"
Williams added, "George is one of the smartest, funniest guys around. David and I are thrilled to be working with him."
The series will be produced by Lionsgate Television in association with Wind Dancer Films, Travieso Productions and 3 Arts Entertainment.

  • 'Game of Thrones' Books 'Treme' Alum for Season 4
Michiel Huisman will join the fourth season of HBO's fantasy drama based on George R.R. Martin's best-sellers.
HBO is reuniting with Michiel Huisman.
The Treme alum has joined the cast of the premium cable network's Game of Thrones, The Hollywood Reporter has confirmed. Huisman will replace Ed Skrein and play Daario Naharis.
Word of Huisman's casting first surfaced on Instagram, where his trainer posted a photo of the actor bulking up to prepare for Thrones.
The actor, who most recently recurred on ABC's Nashville as a love interest for Rayna (Connie Britton), joins Thrones' growing season four cast that includes Joseph Gatt -- whose role also is being kept under wraps. Fan speculation (fueled by Gatt's IMDB page) has him pegged as Styr, Magnar of Thenn, the wildling leader known for his muscular build and hairless body.
In A Storm of Swords, the third book in Thrones author George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire, Styr leads an attack on Castle Black as part of Mance Rayder's assault on the wall. Martin has said Styr will have a role in season four, as well as other new characters Mace Tyrell (father of Margaery and Loras) and Oberyn Martell (better known as The Red Viper – a man with a vendetta against the Lannisters). The latter two roles already have been cast, with Roger Ashton-Griffiths taking on Mace Tyrell and The Red Viper going to Graceland actor Pedro Pascal.
Also on board for Thrones' fourth season is Rome's Indira Varma, who will play The Red Viper's love interest Ellaria Sand; and Sherlock's Mark Gatiss, whose role is also being kept under wraps.
The role marks a reunion for Huisman with HBO, following his starring role on Treme. (The final season of the series returns in December.) Huisman, whose credits also include World War Z, is repped by ICM Partners, Principal Entertainment in New York and attorney Frank Stewart.

LOS ANGELES, CA; JULY 21, 2012 -- PBS announced today that THE ROOSEVELTS: AN INTIMATE HISTORY, a new seven-part, 14-hour documentary by Ken Burns, will air in 2014 on PBS. The film weaves the stories of Theodore, Franklin and Eleanor Roosevelt, three members of one of the most prominent and influential families in American politics. The series marks the first time their individual stories have been woven into a single narrative.
“The Roosevelts have played significant roles in other stories we’ve told before, from the National Parks to World War II,” said Burns. “It’s impossible, in fact, to visit many parts of the American experience without encountering their presence. But beyond simply sharing a bloodline or political success, they each shared a passionate belief that America is at its strongest when everyone has an equal chance. And on a personal level, they each struggled to overcome their own fears while maintaining a public face of courage.”
THE ROOSEVELTS follows the family’s story for more than a century, from Theodore’s birth in 1858 to Eleanor’s death in 1962. Over the course of those years, Theodore would become the 26th president of the United States, and his beloved niece, Eleanor, would marry his fifth cousin, Franklin, who became the 32nd president. Together, they redefined the relationship Americans had with their government and with each other, and redefined, as well, the role of the United States within the wider world. The series encompasses all the history the Roosevelts helped to make — the creation of National Parks and the digging of the Panama Canal, the New Deal and the defeat of Hitler, and the postwar struggles for civil rights at home and human rights around the world in which Eleanor Roosevelt played a central role. But it is also an intimate human story about love and betrayal, family feeling and personal courage and the conquest of fear.
“In THE ROOSEVELTS, Ken delves into these three larger-than-life figures in a way that’s never been done before, exploring not only the characteristics that made them such tremendously influential and strong leaders, but also their interpersonal relationships and human, vulnerable qualities,” said Paula Kerger, president and CEO of PBS. “It’s a wonderful story and we’re very excited to present it to our viewers.”
Legendary actress Meryl Streep portrays Eleanor Roosevelt in readings from her personal letters and writings. Of her performance, Burns said, “As we’ve seen time and time again, Ms. Streep is a magician. Here, she completely transformed herself into Eleanor Roosevelt, simply through her voice. It was remarkable to witness. The entire cast delivers what I consider to be some of the finest voice-over work we’ve ever been fortunate enough to present.”
Joining Streep are Paul Giamatti as the voice of Theodore Roosevelt and Edward Herrmann, two-time Emmy Award nominee for his performance as Franklin Roosevelt, as the voice of FDR.
Rounding out the cast are Patricia Clarkson, Adam Arkin, Philip Bosco, Keith Carradine, Kevin Conway, Ed Harris, John Lithgow, Josh Lucas, Carl Lumbly, Amy Madigan, Carolyn McCormick, Pamela Reed, Billy Bob Thornton and Eli Wallach.
THE ROOSEVELTS is written by longtime Burns collaborator Geoffrey C. Ward, who is an authority on Franklin Roosevelt. The author of two biographical volumes, A First-Class Temperament and Before the Trumpet, he is also the editor of Closest Companion, which revealed for the first time Roosevelt’s close friendship with his distant cousin, Daisy Suckley. • Michael Bay's 'Black Sails' Gets Early Second-Season Renewal at Starz
The pirate drama will premiere in January, with production resuming in November 2013 for a second run of 10 episodes.
More than five months before its series premiere, Starz has granted an early second-season renewal to pirate drama Black Sails.
The Michael Bay-produced drama will premiere in January, with production on a second season of 10 episodes resuming in November 2013, the premium cable network announced Friday at the Television Critics Association's summer press tour.
Launching in 2014, the eight-episode first season follows Captain Flint (Toby Stephens) and his men two years before the story of Robert Louis Stevenson's Treasure Island takes place. Described as a brilliant and feared pirate captain, Flint takes on a fast-talking addition to his crew, John Silver (Luke Arnold). They fight for the survival of New Providence Island, an infamous criminal haven teeming with pirates, prostitutes, thieves and fortune seekers, a place defined by ideals and brutality.
The series was created by Jonathan Steinberg (Jericho) and season-two executive producer Robert Levine (Touch). The drama had a major presence at San Diego Comic-Con. The network used the pop culture confab to screen the pilot at a fan-only event outside of the convention center. The series also had a massive pirate ship on the convention floor.
"Michael Bay, Jon Steinberg and their teams delivered a spectacular first season of Black Sails, and we are incredibly proud of everyone's work," Starz CEO Chris Albrecht said. "Based on the strong fan response to the preview screening at last week's Comic-Con, we felt an early order for a second season would allow the writers, cast and crew enough time and space to continue crafting such unique and epic storytelling."
For Starz, the early renewal marks a sign of confidence in the series, which films on elaborate sets in South Africa. The network previously has granted early second-season orders to shows before their series premieres, most recently for Kelsey Grammer starrer Boss.
The series joins a roster that includes Ron Moore's Outlander, Fortitude and the second season of Da Vinci's Demons. The network is in development on a slew of original dramas including recently announced series Power, from Curtis "50 Cent" Jackson, as the network looks to ramp up its scripted programming by 50 percent in 2014.

  • NBC Buys ‘Wizard Of Oz’ Drama From Matt Arnold As Frank Baum’s Classic Becomes The Hottest TV Property This Season
EXCLUSIVE: A century after the release of L. Frank Baum’s Wizard Of Oz series, the books have become the toast of this TV development season. NBC just nabbed Emerald City, an Oz-themed drama from Siberia creator/showrunner Matthew Arnold. Two weeks ago, CBS put in development Dorothy, a medical soap inspired by the characters and themes from The Wizard of Oz. I hear there is another Oz drama making the rounds from Heroes alums Adam Armus and Nora Kay Foster, with Heroes creator Tim Kring supervising. And just last month, Syfy picked up for development a miniseries titled Warriors Of Oz from director Timur Bekmambetov, a fantasy-action reimagining of the classic story. The great interest in Wizard Of Oz is not entirely unexpected as the title has been getting a lot of attention in conjunction with the upcoming 75th anniversary of the classic 1939 feature, which will include a 3D re-release of the Judy Garland starrer. It also comes on the heels of the success of Oz The Great And Powerful earlier this year.
Emerald City, which Arnold is writing and executive producing through Universal Television, is described as a dark reimagining of the classic tale of Oz in the vein of Game Of Thrones, drawing upon stories from Baum’s original 14 books. Following the success of the 1900 The Wonderful Wizard Of Oz, Baum wrote 13 sequel novels. Emerald City reunites Arnold with NBC, which acquired his mystery drama series Siberia that had been financed independently and sold internationally before finding a U.S. home on NBC as a summer series. Arnold wrote and directed the pilot and the season finale. He also co-wrote three additional episodes and directed seven of the first season’s 13 episodes. Arnold, repped by ICM Partners, David Engel at Circle Of Confusion and attorney Jennifer Levy, recently wrote and directed the supernatural thriller feature Shadow People.

  • Dynasty Set To Return on Big Screen
TV Series Creators Plan Movie Reboot
Somewhere in the world there is an episode of Dynasty airing right now.
More than 30 years after its creation, the iconic nighttime soap opera still resonates with audiences, so show creators Richard and Esther Shapiro are following the trend set by the big screen remakes of series like Sex and the City, The A-Team, Charlie’s Angels, Starsky & Hutch and the planned 21 Jump Street film by rebooting Dynasty as a new film franchise.
“The time is right,” said Esther Shapiro, co-creator of the series with her husband Richard. “Nostalgia has always been big, but we want to take it a step further. We want to go back to the beginning with these characters and use the film to trace their roots. We’re taking Blake Carrington back to his young manhood and when he met Alexis, and setting the movie in the Mad Men era of the 1960s. It will give us the opportunity to start fresh, without the constraints that television placed on our characters in the series.”
