The Thornharts Return
Chapter Two

By Alisa Blevins
Proofread by Iram

Marty could not believe her eyes as she stared into the dark sinister eyes of her captor.  But it couldn’t be….  She stared in shock at the person standing before her.

“Well, Ms. Saybrooke,;  oh pardon me;  I suppose I should say Mrs. Thornhart;  it’s been quite a long time, hasn’t it?” Her captor said as he sat back in his chair, crossed his arms, and smiled.

Marty sat staring into the face of none other than Carlo Hesser.

Marty tried to make sense of it all but couldn’t. “No….it can’t be you….you’re….”

“Dead?” Carlo finished for Marty.  “That seems to be the general consensus, but, as you can see..” Carlo said with a wave of his hand. “I’m alive and well.  Sadly, my poor obtuse brother Mortimer, has indeed met his demise, and people just assumed that it was I who was shot and who’s body was found floating in the Llantano River.  But, enough about ME…how are you and your little family doing?  You have a very sick little girl, I understand.” Carlo said with a knowing look.

Marty’s heart stopped.  How did he know about Penny?

“Well, have no fear.” Carlo continued “I’m sure that the child is being well cared for.  Cherryvale does have some of the finest hospital care that I know of.” He finished with a sly smile.

“Oh my God, he knows where Penny is!” Marty thought to herself.  She struggled to escape from her binds, but to no avail.  “You had better not touch my child Carlo Hesser, or so help me…!” Marty screamed.

“Now, now Marty…I hardly think you are in a position to be making any kind of threats.  Carlo replied, as he sat back with a smug look on his face.

“What do you want Carlo?!?!  What???” Marty yelled.

Carlo sat forward, and Marty could see the anger flashing in his eyes.

“Revenge.” Carlo replied simply.  “And I shall have it.  Your husband Patrick caused me a lot of trouble, and I intend to give him a taste of his own medicine.” After making this last statement, Carlo arose, and walked to the outer door connecting the room that Marty was being held captive in, to the rest of the structure.  Carlo turned, and gave Marty a searing look.  “And you shall be my pawn in this little game of revenge.” At this, Carlo opened the door and left the room.

Marty thought to herself… “What am I going to do?  Nobody knows I’m back in town, except Bo and Patrick.”  Patrick….he was expecting a call from her tonight.  What would he do when he didn’t hear from her?  Maybe he would contact Bo…maybe Bo would come searching for her.  It was her only hope.

In a small, modest home in a village in Ireland, Patrick Thornhart was pacing the floor.  “Come on Angel, where are you?  You said you’d call…where ARE you?” Patrick said aloud to himself.  He was against not going with Marty to America, but under the circumstances, he had stayed behind.  Now he was sorry he had agreed to do so.   He had expected Marty to call him hours ago, and still he hadn’t heard from her.  He felt so helpless.  What if something had gone wrong with Penny?  Finally he decided to call Bo.  Marty had said she was going to contact him after she and Penny had settled in.  Patrick picked up the phone, and dialed the number that would connect him to his good friend.

Bo Buchanan was still poring over reports when his phone rang.  He picked up the receiver.  “Buchanan.” He replied.

“Bo, it’s me..Patrick.” Patrick said.

“Hey!  Paddy me boy!  How are you?  I was sorry to hear that you didn’t make the trip to America with Marty.” Bo said, happy to hear the voice of his friend.

“So, you’ve seen her then?” Patrick asked Bo.

“Yeah…she was here a few hours ago.  She told me all about Penny.  I’m sorry to hear it Patrick.” Bo said with sympathy in his voice.

“Well, she’s in good hands Bo.  Cherryvale is known for it’s fine care of patients with Lupus.” Patrick replied.  “But the reason I’m calling, is that Marty was to call me and fill me in.  It’s been hours, and I haven’t heard from her.  I’m worried.”

“Well, I know that Marty was concerned, because of…well, you know…the past.  I called up the Constable in Cherryvale, and had them put a guard outside Penny’s room, 24 hours a day till she’s released, so I know Penny is being kept safe.  I don’t understand why Marty wouldn’t have contacted you though.  She told me before she left that she was going back to her motel room, to wait for word on Penny.  She gave me her room number.  I’ll go by and make sure everything is ok, if you like.” Bo said.

“I’d appreciate it Bo.  This isn’t like her not to keep in touch.” Patrick replied.

“I’m on my way.  You can call me on my cell phone if you need me.” Bo told Patrick.  “You have the number.”

“Thanks Bo.” Patrick said before he hung up.

“Angel, if anything happens to you, I’ll never forgive myself for not coming with you.” Patrick thought to himself.

About an hour and a half later, Bo Buchanan was pulling into the parking lot of the Waterfront Inn in Cherryvale.  He had called the hospital before leaving Llanview, and they had told him that no one had seen Marty since she had first arrived with her daughter that morning.  He made his way to the back of the motel, to room 301 where Marty had said she was staying.  He approached the door, and rapped loudly several times, but no one answered, and he didn’t see a light on through the curtain.  As he was standing at the door, he noticed something on the ground, about ten feet away.  It was dark and he had almost missed it.  He fished a small penlight out of his pocket as he walked towards the object.  As he  approached, he shined the light on the object.  It was a pair of sunglasses.  The same type that Marty had worn when she entered his office earlier that day.  “Something is not right about this.” Bo said aloud to himself.  He also noticed a rag lying not far from the sunglasses.  He removed a sack from his car, and carefully placed the glasses and rag inside.  Bo then made his way to the office of the motel, and woke the manager;  an elderly man with white hair, named Ed Cummings.

“Thank you for coming out at this late hour Mr. Cummings.” Bo told the manager.

“It’s my pleasure Commissioner Buchanan.” Ed told Bo.  “Anything to help.” He continued as he unlocked the door to Room 301 with his master key.  He switched on the light, and he and Bo entered the room.  Marty’s suitcase was lying on the bed, unopened, and the bed was still made.

“Looks like she didn’t find time to unpack yet.” Ed stated.

“And you say you haven’t seen her since she checked in this morning?” Bo questioned Mr. Cummings.

“No, sir.  She checked in, and didn’t offer much in the way of small talk.” Ed told Bo.

Bo shook his head, as he looked around the room, which offered nothing in the way of clues.  His cell phone rang then, and he fished it out of his pocket.  “Buchanan.”

“It’s me, Bo.  Did you find her?” Patrick asked with concern in his voice.

“No, nothing yet Patrick.” Bo said with a hint of worry in his voice that he couldn’t hide.

“What is it Bo?” Patrick demanded.  “You found something, didn’t you?”

“I’m not sure it’s anything Patrick.  I found a pair of sunglasses on the ground, not far from her door, that are exactly like the ones she was wearing when she came to my office earlier today.” Bo admitted.  “I don’t know if there is anything to it, Patrick, but we can’t take any chances.  I’m contacting the  Cherryvale Police Department to have them investigate, and put out a search for Marty.”

“Bo, I don’t like it.  I don’t like it at all.  I should be there.  I’m taking the next flight out.” Patrick said matter-of-factly.  “I’ll contact you when I arrive.”

“Patrick……” Bo started… “…be careful my friend, and let me know the second you arrive in Llanview.” He finished.

“I will.  See you soon Bo.” Patrick said, and he then hung up and made plans to leave Ireland that night.

Will Bo and Patrick find Marty?  What are Carlo’s plans for Marty?  And will Penny be safe?  Tune in next week to find out!
