Hulu to Maintain Rights to New Seasons and Episodes and Remain Only SVOD Home for Current 254-Episode “South Park” Library
19th Season Premieres Wednesday, September 16
NEW YORK, July 8, 2015 – Trey Parker and Matt Stone have reached a new deal with Comedy Central® to extend “South Park” by three seasons and 30 episodes, taking the longest-running primetime scripted series in cable though an unprecedented 23rd season and 304 episodes. The deal for three additional seasons, announced today by Michele Ganeless, President, Comedy Central, ensures the Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning series will continue to produce new, original episodes through 2019. Parker and Stone will continue to write, direct and edit every episode of “South Park,” as they have since the premiere of the series in 1997. The 19th season of “South Park” premieres on Wednesday, September 16.
In a separate deal, South Park Digital Studios, a joint venture between Parker, Stone and Viacom, has extended its record-breaking deal with Hulu to cover all additional seasons and new episodes. Hulu is the exclusive streaming home of the entire “South Park” library of 18 seasons and 254 episodes and will also remain the SVOD home to all episodes from upcoming seasons.
“Nearly two decades later, ‘South Park’ today remains as important and influential as any series on any platform and has become one of the most recognizable brands to ever come out of television,” said Doug Herzog, President, Viacom Music & Entertainment Group. “Through South Park Digital Studios we will continue to aggressively expand the reach of the ‘South Park’ brand by pursuing additional extensions and licensing opportunities worldwide.”
“‘South Park’ remains the bedrock of Comedy Central and we are thrilled that new episodes will continue to entertain audiences for years to come,” said Ganeless. “The series remains as urgent and relevant now as the day it premiered and at nearly 20 seasons in it continues to draw generations of new fans.”
Said Parker and Stone: “We love working for Doug and with everyone at Comedy Central. They’ve given us an insane level of artistic and creative freedom for almost 20 years. They walk the walk.”
Named “One of the All-Time Greatest TV Shows” by Entertainment Weekly and one of the “All-TIME 100 TV Shows” by TIME, “South Park,” which premieres its 19th season on September 16, was the top-rated comedy series on cable in 2014 among Adults 18-49 and Men 18-34 and was the #1-rated series in primetime across all of television on Wednesdays during its 18th season with Men 18-34 and Men 18-24.
The incredible popularity of “South Park” extends off the television screen with over 46 million fans on Facebook, making it the most-popular cable comedy series on Facebook and one of the Top 10 series in all of television. With over 1.7 million followers, “South Park” is one of the top scripted television series on Twitter and it has ranked #1 or #2 for Comedy Series by Nielsen Social Guide on its premiere nights during the course of its past season. In addition, the series’ award-winning game, “South Park: The Stick of Truth,” which was released last year, received numerous industry awards and a Metacritic rating of 85. A sequel, “South Park: The Fractured but Whole,” was announced earlier this month by Ubisoft® and South Park Digital Studios.
Co-created by Trey Parker and Matt Stone, “South Park” premiered on August 13, 1997. Parker, Stone, Anne Garefino and Frank C. Agnone II are the Executive Producers of the Emmy® and Peabody® Award-winning series. Eric Stough, Adrien Beard, Bruce Howell and Vernon Chatman are Producers.

  • 05.27.2015 Fan Question: In the 1st Season opening, you can see a little TV in the background and it’s playing something. What’s the video playing on that TV?
Answer: You mean the TV on the side of the road showing a crazy-looking snowman?
That’s actually the very-first version of “The Spirit of Christmas” (aka “Jesus vs. Frosty”) from 1992. This was Matt and Trey’s first South Park-style animated short, which they made in college.
Also, if you look on the right side of the road after Cartman sings his solo, there’s ANOTHER little easter egg. The screen with Santa spinning Jesus over his head is a snippet from Matt and Trey’s updated 1995 version of “The Spirit of Christmas” (aka “Jesus vs. Santa”)… which went on to become the basis for South Park as you know it.
If you wanna see an even longer “Spirit of Christmas” cameo, check out this clip from the Season 4 holiday special, “A Very Crappy Christmas”.

"SIX DAYS TO AIR: THE MAKING OF 'SOUTH PARK'" AN EXCLUSIVE BEHIND-THE-SCENES DOCUMENTARY FILM BY ARTHUR BRADFORD PREMIERES SUNDAY, OCTOBER 9 AT 10:00 P.M. ON COMEDY CENTRAL
Renowned Documentarian Arthur Bradford Granted Unprecedented Access To Creators Trey Parker And Matt Stone Throughout Production Of "South Park's" Spring Run
All-New Episodes Of "South Park" Air On Wednesdays At 10:00 P.M.
NEW YORK, September 28, 2011 "If 'South Park' is one of television's great comedies, it's not great for being reckless; it's great for being a series of funny, topical parables." - New York Times, April 28, 2004
"Stone and Parker show no fear. They don't care what anyone else thinks, nor do they worry about who they offend. A decade on, still fighting the good fight on all fronts, still being unapologetically disrespectful, crass and cruel to just about everyone, as it should be." -SF Chronicle, July 15, 2006
"'South Park's' dialogue can be scategorical as well as philosophical and every bit as profane as it is profound." "60 Minutes" September 25, 2011
Renowned documentarian Arthur Bradford ("Hows Your News?") was granted unprecedented access to Trey Parker and Matt Stone, the creative masterminds behind the Emmy and Peabody Award-winning series, "South Park." Shot extensively over the course of three months at the South Park Studios in Los Angeles, this exclusive documentary film, "Six Days to Air: The Making of 'South Park,'" chronicles the rigorous process of producing the iconic series in under a week. Bradfords cameras were granted access into the creative process, opening up Parker and Stones world to reveal the high-pressure work environment that allows them to turn an idea into a full 22-minute episode each week. COMEDY CENTRAL debuts the hour-long documentary film, "Six Days to Air: The Making of 'South Park'" on Sunday, October 9 at 10:00 p.m. All-new episodes of "South Park" air on Wednesday at 10:00 p.m.
"We wanted to make something that would appeal to both the hard-core fans and the casual viewers," said Bradford. "Trey and Matt are two of the most interesting people I know and the way they make 'South Park' is completely fascinating and inspiring."
"This documentary offers an unprecedented, inside view at the true genius of Trey Parker and Matt Stone," said Alterman. "If they stick with it, I feel certain 'South Park' will become the hit show they've always dreamed about."
Viewers will get a look at Parker and Stone's thought process as they approach a new episode and the 24/7 grind they subject themselves to each time the show is in production. The documentary also includes in-depth interviews with Parker and Stone about their working partnership and reflections on highlights from their careers, such as the making of the original short, "The Spirit of Christmas," as well as their memorable appearance at the 2000 Oscars when they walked the red carpet in drag.

    • Trey Parker, celebrating 15 years of South Park, talking about his close friendship with cocreator Matt Stone:* "We've definitely moved from best friends to married couple. It's kind of funny. Because we went from *South Park* to 'Book of Mormon' to *South Park* to 'Book of Mormon,' it's like, 'OK, now we don't need to see each other for a couple months.' And we won't. It's healthier for everyone that way!"
