• From Sci Fi Magazine December 2014 issue: EVIL HAS A PLAN The stakes are high in season 2 of Sleepy Hollow as Ichabod and Abbie form an army to battle the four horseman.
  Sleepy Hollow is a hub for supernatural activity. The small town has been terrorized by the Headless Horseman, targeted by demons, and appears to be ground zero for Henry's (John Noble) plan to reunite the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse. Only a resurrected Ichabod Crane (Tom Mison), his sorcerous wife Katrina (Katia Winter), along with locals Captain Frank Irving (Orlando Jones), Lieutenant Abbie Mills (Nicole Beharie), and her sister Jenny (Lyndie Greenwood), stand against those malevolent forces.
  However, in the Season 1 finale, "Bad Blood," the good guys were down for the count. Ichabod was buried alive.  Abbie became trapped in purgatory. The Headless Horseman nabbed Katrina and rod off. A car accident left Jenny clinging to life and Captain Irving got locked up in the slammer.
  Assuming some --or all-- of them survive, desperate times will call for desperate measures.  When Season 2 of Sleepy Hollow begins, Ichabod and company will have some tough decisions and sacrifices to make to prevent the Apocalypse.
  "That's really what the season is about," says executive producer Mark Goffman, "What are the limits? And then getting to put these characters through trials and tribulations. We want to have Crane and Abbie confront family in a way we just started last season.  It's now very much, 'When your son is the Horseman of War, how much are you able to change who that person is? How much do you need to weight that against your duty to your wife, who you haven't seen in 200 years and who has held secrets from you?' We learned last season that Katrina was a witch. We also learned she was a spy.  Henry is boldly in front of us and has planted himself in Sleepy Hollow.  He's going around as an attorney. That's going to be a huge change in the tenor of Sleepy Hollow. What is he doing as an attorney? All the jokes aside about attorneys being the devil, this one really is."
  At least Henry is flesh and blood.  The otherworldly Headless Horseman has proven unstoppable.  To even the playing field, Ichabod and Abbie summon a Kindred creature to engage the Horseman. Magic always comes with a steep price and there will be consequences for such a gamble.
  "One of the themes we wanted to explore in that episode is when battling monsters, do you have to become a monster yourself?" Goffman explains.  "Do you have to create a monster to do that? Our characters, in their need for justice and revenge and to save the world from an impeding Apocalypse, have to weigh those questions and are really put to the test in every episode, but particularly with the Kindred.  They find a way through Benjamin Franklin's notes to create a monster as strong as death itself."
  While the gang pulls itself together and strategizes, Sleepy Hollow's newest residents promise to shake things up. There's Captain Irving's replacement, Sheriff Reyes (Sakina Jaffrey) and bounty hunter Nick Holly (Matt Barr).  Both have ties to Sleepy Hollow, so whether they help or hinder the troops remains to be seen.
  "Sheriff Reyes is really tough and has been brought to Sleepy Hollow because things got very out of control last season," reports Goffman.  "Captain Irving, who had come in to help keep things under control, within a very short period of time was suddenly confessing to double murder. Reyes  has a pretty hard job and has to come in and clean things up to get the town going. Meanwhile, you have Abbie and Crane.  Suddenly, it's 'Who is this guy (Ichabod) who claims to be a history consultant?" Reyes wasn't there for any of last season, so it doesn't make sense to her to have Crane there. That's a real obstacle for our characters because they are used to working in the archives and doing their own things and having Irving run interference.  Now, they don't have that anymore.  That's a big change in the way things work for our two heroes.  How do they deal with her? Do they try to win her over? Do they become enemies?"
  "Meanwhile, to complicate matters more, Reyes has a history with Abbie's family," says Goffman.  "She was in the Sheriff's Department a long time ago, before she joined the border patrol.  She was around when Abbie's mother was unstable and crazy.  Reyes has some direct experience with that and is going to play a pivotal part in Abbie and Jenny learning about the secrets behind their family.
  "What I love bout Matt Barr and his character Nick Holly is they bring a totally different energy to the series," he continues.  "Nick doesn't have the weight of saving the world on his shoulders.  He cares about living in the moment, having fun and making a buck off of the artifacts he trades in.  In his encounters with our characters, a lot of sparks fly."
  Similar to last season, evil has a plan.  It's not going to stop until it succeeds.  That relentless onslaught forces Abbie and Ichabod to anticipate Henry's new moves and take a more proactive stance.
  "This year, they really want to get ahead of it," states Goffman. "They are more prepared.  Their eyes are wide open so they won't be fooled again.  Henry is right in their face, so they have their work cut out for them.  But they also have an army of their own they are building."
  "Even though Irving is in prison, he doesn't stay there," Goffman says. "Irving is transferred to psychiatric on an insanity plea.  He tries to be helpful from there, although evil has its own design for him.  He unwittingly sold his soul to Henry, his attorney.  If you have a choice in the matter, you don't want the Horseman of War as your lawyer."
  "While Abbie and Crane are building their own army, one of the key things that happens in the second episode is Crane goes to rescue Katrina," adds Goffman.  "At the climatic moment, when he's finally able to set her free, she makes the choice to stay.  She's going to stay captive and become a double agent.  This war is too important and if they have any chance of winning, it's by becoming closer to the Headless Horseman, who is Abraham, and becoming closer with Henry.  If she stays, she'll be able to find out more of their plan and ideally report back to Crane. It's an incredibly powerful, emotional, but courageous choice by Katrina."
  As the conversation draws to a close, Goffman addresses the other big issue for the sophomore season. Henry's master plan revolves around the Four Horseman of the Apocalypse walking the Earth, but that doesn't mean they are all on the same page. Do all four of these supernatural entities crave death and destruction and if so, do they agree on how to go about achieving it?
  "That's a great question," says Goffman. "We got a sample of that last season when we captured the Horseman of Death and learned he went rogue and went after Crane, even though that was not his assigned mission by Moloch."
  "Even though there are four horsemen, we've met two of them, and they have their own agendas," Goffman concludes. "Henry clearly has some daddy and mommy issues that he has to work out.  What's really interesting for us is getting to play out what humanity there may be left in those characters."

  Actor Neil Jackson brings a bit of humanity to his war machine without a head.
  The Headless Horseman is about to gain a body part.  In the Season 1 episode, "Necromancer," a flashback revealed the Horseman was once a wealthy human named Abraham Van Brunt (Neil Jackson).  After this betrothed Katrina broke off their engagement because she had feelings for his best friend, Ichabod Crane, Abraham sold his soul to Moloch in order to exact revenge.  Thus, the Headless Horseman was born.
  Jackson jumped on the phone to discuss becoming a part of the series, Abraham's increased presence in Season 2, and sword fighting.
  How did this gig come about? Had you auditioned for the series before or did they approach you for the part?
  They contacted me for a couple of reasons. One, Mark Goffman, who is the showrunner, needed someone who could sword fight.  They didn't have much time to train the actors for the sword-fighting scene, which was in the episode I did last year where they introduced the character.  Mark also really wanted me for the part, so he just called up and asked if I was available.  I knew of the show, but hadn't seen any of it yet. I went over thinking it was just going to be one episode. I had an absolute blast doing it.  I got along really with Tom Mison and everyone involved in it. I heard nothing more of it. Then we got a call in February saying, "We got an 18-episode pick up. We'd love for Neil to come back and reprise the role,"  It was a real gift that came out of nowhere.
  What did you enjoy about the show's take on the iconic Headless Horseman?
  Even people who aren't aware of the whole folklore know about the Headless Horseman. It's the iconic image of the show.  To give the Headless Horseman a backstory and a face is really fun to see develop.  In Season 2 they've done a fun device that allows the Headless Horseman to be humanized slightly through Abraham, which is really fun to see.  I loved the backstory.  He's not a bad guy. He's a guy that's a little misunderstood. He's in love with Katrina and believes she is going to be perfect for him. Then this moment happens, which obviously shows that he has this aggression and rage within him, that he's not completely sane by the way he goes off the deep end.  That's something they are advancing in Season 2, this hair-trigger within him.
  Will Abraham appear in the present or only in flashbacks for Season 2?
  I'm not sure how much I'm allowed to say. What I can say is that two co-exist. The Headless Horseman and Abraham co-exist.  You get the chance to see both sides of the coin.  It gives a commentary on who he is past this war machine without a head.  They co-exist in a really smart way that I didn't think they were able to do and I wasn't sure they'd be able to do. The moment I read it, it's completely logical and absolutely brilliant the way they merge the characters without losing Headless and all of Abraham.
  Last time we saw the Headless Horseman, he was riding off with Katrina. Where do things pick up?
  They pick up immediately after. You have Ichabod buried alive by Henry, who is his son. We just found out Henry is War. Abbie is trapped in purgatory. Katrina has just been taken off by the Headless Horseman.  So, it's 'How do we get all of the lead characters out of the jeopardy they are in?' The first episode goes at a fast pace.  I read the script in 20 minutes It's just a page-turner because you are trying to figure out how these people get out of peril.  We're on the third episode right now and we're still within the first few days of that event happening because so much gets unraveled.
  Abraham seems pretty adept with a sword.  Have those action sequences been an added bonus?
  It's not just icing on the cake. I absolutely love it. My background is fighting. I was a boxer for years. A lot of stuff I've done is fight-based. Action is so much fun to shoot and action is so much fun as an audience member to watch, but the action has to come out of general character emotion. The characters have to have a distinct arc and a reason for going into action.  The fun thing with this show is the stakes are so high for everybody.
  This isn't your first crack at playing the villain. What's gratifying about exploring these dark characters?
  Yeah, I do tend to play the bad guys.  The heroes are great. The heroes are really col. You root for the heroes, but it's rare that you get a three-dimensional hero.  Nobody apart from Mother Theresa and Gandhi is pure and virtuous every single moment. The broken, flawed heroes are the more interesting ones. The villains get to have all the fun because they're not bound by the fact that the audience needs to like them or needs to root for them.  The shackles that the hero has are thrown off for the villain.  The villain can be as genuine as he chooses to be, which means they get to do a lot more cool stuff.
