Scott Wolf and James Van Der Beek have signed on for ABC pilots that we can only assume will be 1998's coolest new shows.

Joining the "Dawson's Creek" and "Party of Five" stars in pilots at ABC are familiar faces including Jerry O'Connell and Flex Alexander.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Van Der Beek will be part of the bulging ensemble of "Football Wives." The show focuses on wives of professional football players (in case the title didn't give that one away) and will feature the former "Varsity Blues" star as a rookie.

The cast already features Gabrielle Union, Kiele Sanchez, Lucy Lawless, Ving Rhames, Eddie Cibrian and Arielle Kebbel.

Van Der Beek, given a high profile showcase in the "Criminal Minds" Super Bowl episode, has done comedy pilots the past two development seasons.

Meanwhile, Wolf will play the lead litigator in a high profile firm in the network's untitled Sachs/Judah project. Geoffrey Arend has also joined the cast, which includes Kym Whitley, Ashley Williams and Alyda Field.

Wolf starred in ABC's drama "The Nine" this season after a multi-season run on The WB's "Everwood."

The ABC comedy "The Carpoolers" has picked up a slew of leads in O'Connell ("Crossing Jordan"), Jerry Minor ("Lucky Louie") and Fred Goss ("Sons and Daughters"). The pilot focuses on four guys who carpool to work each day. Faith Ford, T.J. Miller and Allison Munn were previously cast.

Finally, Alexander, Kathryn Hahn and Matthew Morrison are joining Jayma Mays ("Heroes") in the comedy pilot "Nice Girls Don't Get the Corner Office."

Whew. That's a lot of ABC casting.

Katie Holmes (Joey) is engaged to movie star Tom Cruise.

FUNNIEST COMMENT FROM A NON-TV STAR
Each year, WB's communications director Keith Marder does a hilarious standup routine before The WB's boring executive session. The highlight this year — his jab at Tom Cruise: "I always knew Tom would end up with someone from "Dawson's Creek." I just thought it would be James Van Der Beek."
