I always enjoy this show, even though it does have the same jokes over and over.
Charlie's a drunk who sleeps around a lot. Alan is very cheap and neurotic. His
son is not too bright. Their mother is a bitch. And so on. There are a lot of
sex jokes, too, and I can see that as the show has progressed, they have gotten
more raunchy. None of this is bad if you find the jokes funny, and fortunately,
I do.
This is the last season with Charlie Sheen (and I'm sure we all know why). He is
probably smart to leave it now while he is still relatively good-looking, and
the show is still funny. When the show first started, he was the cute guy on the
show, but now the actor who plays his nephew, Angus T. Jones, is the cute one
(what happened to that fat kid? LOL!).
The show may be a sitcom, but there is actually a sort of plot that goes from
episode-to-episode with Charlie and Alan's love lives. I never knew they did
that before. Watching the shows all at once this way really does feel like a
comedy movie rather than individual shows. Unfortunately, since the season
was cut short, due to the dispute with Sheen, the season on the DVD ends rather
abruptly. It's a shame because it looked like it was building to an interesting
season finale.
I don't know if I will watch the show this fall when Aston Kutcher comes in to
replace Charlie Sheen. If he plays the same dumb guy that he played on "That
70's Show", it will be boring. We'll have to wait and see what happens. I'll be
interested, at least, to see what excuse they give for the character of
Charlie's sudden disappearance. When we last saw him, he was headed to
Paris with his girlfriend (his former stalker), not realizing that she had lied
about getting married, nor that Alan had swindled him. I assume they will still
continue the Alan storyline...
Unfortunately, the DVD has no features or extras. Given that the season was so
controversial and cut short, I guess that is to be expected. It's still a shame,
though....it would have been nice if they had somehow addressed all the
backstage controversy. Maybe they couldn't due to legal reasons? I don't know...
