DVD TV Show Reviews
I knew I would love this show before I even watched it.
For one thing, I met Amber Tamblyn in 1999 when she was on "General Hospital",
and she was very nice and fun. I have watched her for years on that show,
so I knew what a great actress she was. They were smart to give her a
starring role in primetime because she is really excellent.
Also, I love science fiction/fantasy shows, and that's what
"Joan" is, even though it's about a girl who talks to God. Some may think
that this show is more like "Touched by an Angel" than any science fiction show.
It's really not because Joan is a typical teen. She is not overly
religious or pious (she is no angel). She is not really happy about God
talking to her and thereby messing up her life by giving her tasks to perform.
In this way, she is much like the reluctant heroine of "Buffy the Vampire
Slayer", another great show.
The show has a lot of humor because Joan is funny and
sarcastic, and God has a great sense of humor as well. I am not at all
religious, so to me, God is a fantasy figure, no different than if Joan were
talking to a martian or leprechuan. I can enjoy the show and just suspend
disbelief the same way I do for "My Favorite Martian", "Bewitched" or "Star
Trek". For the sake of the show, God is the ultimate good guy and he works
through Joan. What makes it interesting is seeing how Joan does God's work
and still manages to go through her normal day, dealing with typical teen
problems, and interacting with family and friends.
This is a good show for people of any age to watch.
The extras include deleted scenes, audio commentaries, some behind-the-scenes
short films. A good collection for your money!
