DVD TV Show Reviews
NOTE: This airs starting January 10th on SyFy.
Caprica takes place on one of the planets in the "Battlestar
Galactica" universe, 50-plus years before the events that take place in that
show. In the original BSG miniseries, we only got a glimpse of life in that
world. This TV show shows us a lot more of the world that was demolished in BSG
when the Cylons attacked.
The action focuses on two families and how they are connected after a tragedy
involving their children. One is the Adama family, whom we are somewhat familiar
with from BSG, even if it is their parents and siblings. The world of Caprica is
similar to our world, although the technology is a bit more advanced. They have
coffee and cigarettes, and they take subways. This makes the show relatable to
non-Battlestar Galactica watchers.
You really don't have to have ever watched an episode of BSG to understand
what's going on in "Caprica". If you are a BSG fan, you will find it interesting
as well. The DVD came out before the show aired on TV, but the rest of the show
airs in August on the SciFi Channel.
It is a good drama, good scifi, and good soap opera as well. It does not have a
lot of humor, much like BSG, but it's riveting, intense drama, with excellent
writing that will not let you down.
One of the great things about this show is it's movie-quality
cast, including Esai Morales and Eric Stoltz. The casting is excellent, just
like it was with BSG.
I look forward to watching the rest of the series. The DVD is well worth
getting. It has commentary from the producers and writers, some deleted scenes,
and some video blogs. It's not very expensive, either.
