Bonekickers [Blu-ray] cover

 Bonekickers [Blu-ray]

  Review by Suzanne 11/12/11

Bonekickers is about a team of archaeologists that find relics and try to figure out how they got there and other history and information. It sounds kind of boring, but they try to make it exciting with lots of re-creations of the past, as well as conflicts in the personal relationships between the characters. It's a little like "Bones", but without the murders.

I enjoyed it. I'm not sure how they could have made this a long-running show without really changing things up. The cast is really good; the acting is fine. You may recognize some very familiar faces. The camera work and settings are also beautiful. I really enjoyed the previous show "Life on Mars", written by the same people, Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharaoh.

The Blu-ray version has an interesting interactive thing where they take you behind-the-scenes of the show. I would recommend this to anyone who is a fan of scifi or fantasy shows, as well as forensic shows like CSI or Bones or even fans of Indiana Jones.

Silver Spring, Md — From the multi-award-winning team behind Life on Mars, Bonekickers debuts on Blu-ray from Acorn Media on October 11, 2011. Broadcast on BBC, this 2008 action-adventure series follows a motley team of archaeologists as they unearth secrets from the past. The first-rate ensemble cast features Hugh Bonneville (Downton Abbey, Iris), Julie Graham (Survivors, The Bill, At Home with the Braithwaites), Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Undercovers, Larry Crowne, Doctor Who), and Adrian Lester (Hustle, Primary Colors), with guest stars Eamonn Walker (Oz) and Burn Gorman (Torchwood). Past and present meet with explosive results in this British drama series called “a bit of Doctor Who fantasy, hints of a Da Vinci Code riddle, and even elements of CSI” (The Times). Led by the fiery Dr. Gillian Magwilde (Julie Graham), an intrepid team of archaeologists finds mud, blood, and death-defying adventure when they start digging. Combining historical mysteries with modern forensics, each episode focuses on a particular period in history, from the Crusades to Joan of Arc, King Arthur, and soldiers fighting in World War I. Set in the beautiful ancient city of Bath, England, the series blends modern forensics with historical mysteries for exciting entertainment.

Bonekickers was written and executive produced by Matthew Graham and Ashley Pharaoh, co-creators of Life on Mars and its sequel Ashes to Ashes. The series debuted on BBC One in July 2008 and aired on select public television stations in the U.S. in summer 2009. Acorn Media previously released Bonekickers in a DVD 3-Disc Set in January 2010 ($39.99).
