"Prime Suspect"
review by Suzanne
Airs Thursdays 10/9c on NBC
I recently saw the original UK "Prime Suspect", which is
brilliant, so when watching the new U.S. version, I braced myself. I have to say
that it's very different, but in a good way. It's good that they didn't just
totally recreate the original because it was in 1991, and things have changed,
and drama has changed. Also, British and American dramas are very different.
I enjoyed the Prime Suspect episodes I have watched so far. Mario Bello's Jane
is not much like Helen Mirren's Jane, and that's a good thing, too. Both are
tough, and clever, but that's about where the similarities end. In the U.S.
version, Jane seems close to her father, and her boyfriend is kind of silly or
weak-seeming to me. Actually, his role is the only one I don't like. I enjoy
seeing the other characters that Jane has to work with. I think they are very
well-definied (and unlike the original version, more multi-ethnic).
The only thing I think is silly is the names; they are very British and seem
weird for American TV. Jane and Reg? Desmond? Come on....
It's a good show, and I know NBC is hoping it does well. They are really pushing
it. I think it deserves a good shot. it's a very gritty, fairly realistic cop
show.
