"Stephen King's Bag of Bones"
review by Suzanne
Premieres Sunday, December 11th on A&E
First I have to tell what an impressive and cool package A&E
sent to me. They didn't just send the DVD. They sent me this box, and inside the
box is a cardboard (but very sturdy) box that looks very old. And when you open
it, it plays music, and it looks like an old phonograph. Then if you open it,
the DVD booklet is under that, and it has not only the disks but cool pictures
and info. Very nifty collector's item!
The reason there is a phonograph has to do with the story, of
course. This miniseries is based on a Stephen King novel. I have read a
lot of his, but not this one. Sometimes they do a good job of adapting his
novels, and sometimes they don't. I can't speak to that, but I can tell by the
Wikipedia description of the book that they did change quite a few details.
Anyway,
it's an intriguing miniseries, and it's quite spooky. They do a very good job
with that. I felt that at times, it moved a little too slowly, and at other
times, it was quite confusing about what was going on, but eventually it was all
explained. I also felt that part of the movie was a little too over-the-top,
almost campy instead of scary.
Pierce Brosnan, one of my favorite actors, stars as a writer,
Mike Noonan, who writes best-selling novels (much like Stephen King himself) and
is in love with his wife. Like in most Stephen King novels, something terrible
happens to the wife, and Mike grieves for her. Brosnan does a terrific job
showing his grief. He starts having weird dreams about the cabin that he and his
wife own in a place called Dark Score Lake, so he goes up there and starts
experiencing lots of weird things.
This is where the confusing part came in because you don't
always know if what he is seeing is a dream, or a hallucination, or what.
The townsfolk are all kind of weird, too. Mike learns that his house is a
bit haunted, and he also sees his dead wife, and he learns the secret of the
town and why his house is haunted.
I don't want to ruin it for you by providing too many details.
There's lots of scary stuff. Fortunately, it is not gory like a lot of
Stephen King books and movies. It's more of the old-fashioned kind of scary
movie.
Matt Frewer has a bit part as Mike's brother, and Jason Priestly
has a small role as Mike's agent. Melissa George plays a young woman named
Mattie, and Annabeth Gish plays Jo, his wife. I would say 80% of the
screen time is Brosnan, so that was good for me, as a Pierce Brosnan fan!

western Maine. While there, Mike befriends an attractive young widow, Mattie
(George) and her daughter Kyra (Carmichael), and becomes involved in a custody
battle with the child's enormously wealthy grandfather, Max (Schallert). Though
his ability to write suddenly returns, Mike is plagued by ever-escalating
