Primetime Show Reviews
"Mr. Sunshine"
review by Suzanne
Airs Wednesdays 9:30 pm/8:30 pm c
I watched the first two episodes of "Mr. Sunshine". The premise
sounded funny: a guy who is hitting middle age runs a second-rate sports arena
in San Diego. I'm from San Diego, so I liked the idea. It stars Chandler from
Friends, Matthew Perry. I loved him in that show and also in "Studio 60 on the
Sunset Strip" But you know what, this show is not nearly as good as either of
those. In fact, it's almost as if someone watched "Studio 60" and said, "Hey, I
can make a show like that!" except that person is not as funny or as good of a
writer as Aaron Sorkin. Also, even Studio 60 was canceled, so why try to emulate
it?
When I first watched "Mr. Sunshine", I thought, I don't like this show. It's not
funny, and the characters are unlikable. However, the end of the first show was
kind of funny. I liked parts of the second show much more, and the characters
improved. It's still not all that funny, though. If it were on TVLAND and had
lots of special guest stars from the 70's and 80's, perhaps it would be a hit,
like "Hot in Cleveland" or "Retired at 35", but it's not. It tries hard to be
quirky and glib, but it just doesn't work.
I don't know why Matthew Perry and his co-star, Allison Janney, who are both
very talented, agreed to do this dumb show. Even James Lesure (from "Las Vegas")
is wasted in this. I hope they make it better. It is not a horrible show.
The writers just need to concentrate on making the show funny instead of quirky.
I don't think I'm the only one who dislikes the show because it
has not been doing very well in the ratings. I don't think it will last much
longer.
