Random Thoughts, Questions, & Ideas

I have given a lot of thought about what I wanted to
write about this week. Last week all of the AMC web sites
reported what is being called a rumor that the show was
going to be cancelled by ABC. Well, either it was a rumor,
or the show narrowly dodged a bullet, but for the time
being, AMC will continue its 40+ year run. TPTB however,
should take this latest incident as a wake-up call and start
to “Put on their big boy pants” and get the show back on
track. Otherwise, the next time we hear about the show being
cancelled, it won’t be a rumor. That would be a very sad day
for long-time viewers of this history breaking show.
As a long-time viewer (since 1976 full-time), I
appreciate that the show produces 5 episodes a week, 52
weeks a year for 40+ years. That is unprecedented in the
entertainment industry. For the most part, AMC has hit their
mark more times than it has missed. You have to be realistic
in this show being on so long, that not every character
and/or storyline is going to be a winner. Something has
happened though in the past 5 or so years. The writing has
been hit or miss, the storylines sometimes very powerful and
more often lately, totally ridiculous or boring. AMC has
also lost many long-time characters either through death
(unavoidable) or through actors leaving or being let go. I
also don’t believe that the move to California has done
anything substantial to help the show, as it was supposed to
do. TPTB also have been putting “all their eggs in one
basket,” by using just a few of what they believe to be the
frontrunner characters and putting them on day after day for
months on end. After a while as a viewer, whether you like
the character or not, you want to see other people. There
are many good actors on this show that simply get a walk on
or used more like a prop. That is quite a disservice to
these actors.
What I don’t understand is we have the Internet now.
There are so many web sites devoted to AMC each with viewer
message boards. Fans are able to instantly share their
opinions about the show with other fans. Why doesn’t TPTB
and the writers use this information? I understand that you
are never going to please everyone. However, listening to
what the viewers like and do not like and incorporating that
information into the show would have to make a difference.
Viewers (myself included) also suggest some very good and
interesting storylines, or ones they would like to see for
certain characters. I know story boards are done way into
the future, but would it hurt to take some suggestions.
All I am trying to say is we viewers are very loyal to
this show and do not want to see it cancelled. So please
ABC, AMC Powers That Be and Writers, take what we fans have
to say seriously, and just give us what we want to see. You
ratings will go up, the network will be happy, and we the
loyal fans of AMC will continue to enjoy the people of Pine
Valley for years to come.
Well, that’s about all for now. Have a great week.
I would love to hear from any of my readers.
