Samson glared at Ned and Jax, and both backed up quickly as the elegant
blue parrot spread his wings, clearly intent on protecting Izzy, whom he
adored.
She grinned when the men retreated and soothed Samson’s ruffled feathers
by stroking him gently. He moved his head under her hand, wanting to be
rubbed, which she lovingly did.
“They won’t hurt me, Boy; they are friendly,” she told him. Amazingly,
he somehow seemed to understand and hopped from her finger to the top of
his cage. He perched and still watched the two men carefully.
“Better than a guard dog,” she told the men with a smile.
“Well, now that you’ve had the grand tour, shall we join the party?” she
grinned.
Once downstairs, she rummaged through a kitchen drawer and found a
corkscrew.
“We could, however, have a cocktail first. Is the wine cold?” she asked
Jax, who grinned and nodded. “Open it for me?” she asked, handing it to
him. Ned grinned the hint of a smile, watching the attraction crackle
between his cousin and his friend.
“My hero,” Izzy said as Jax handed her the wine, and she poured three
crystal stems full of it.
“Always delighted to be of assistance to a lady in distress," Jax
bantered back.
Ned rolled his eyes and added, “It’s getting a little thick in here for
me.... Should I give the two of you some privacy?”
Izzy grinned and kissed Ned’s cheek affectionately. “What’s the matter,
Cousin?” she teased him lightly. “Don’t tell me we are making you
uncomfortable, or offending your delicate sensibilities?”
“Hardly that," Ned began drily. “It’s simply a mental image I’d prefer
not to have of Jax....or of you, for that matter.”
“Well, then, I guess it truly is time to join the party," she said,
linking one arm in Jax’s elbow and the other in Ned’s elbow, and leading
them towards the door.
