AMC Q&A

Catching up with Colin Egglesfield (ex Josh)
By Laurie Bedigian
September 4, 2011

After playing Josh Madden on ABC's "All My Children," Colin Egglesfield headed to primetime where he spent a year on The CW's version of "Melrose Place" as Auggie. More recently, Egglesfield can be seen opposite Kate Hudson in the popular romantic comedy "Something Borrowed," based on the Emily Griffin book by the same name.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with the Michigan-born actor about his experience on daytime television.

Q.  Can you talk a little bit about working on "All My Children"?  Was it your first experience on a soap opera and was it something you had aspired to do before you booked the role?

A.  It wasn't something that I originally thought I would want to do, but I was at a place in my career where I was having a difficult time getting acting work and when the role came up, I felt the character was interesting.  It was a three-year contract and … it was an amazing, incredible experience.  I learned a ton about acting … working with Susan Lucci and a lot of other veteran actors … it felt like a great place to get a good start on my acting career.

Q.  Talk about working with Susan Lucci – were you aware of what a big name in daytime she was and if so, was it at all intimidating?

A.  When I went into the audition, they didn't tell anyone the character was Erica Kane's son.  It wasn't until I got hired and six months after I was on the show that they told me I was the son of "Erica Kane." I think if they would have told me from the get go … I think there would have been a lot more pressure, and I don't know if I necessarily would have gotten the role. It was incredible.  It was great to be able to work with her.

Q.  How did you feel when you heard that AMC was cancelled?

A.  For something that's been on the air for over 40 years, it was sad to hear…..  I wasn't surprised … just because over the years there's been that talk and salaries were reduced and the advertising dollars just weren't coming in like they used to.  It's hard to believe that after all these years, it's not going to be there anymore.

Q.  How has the fan reaction been to you over the years?

A.  When I was on AMC, I'd get random people coming up to me and saying, "You're Erica Kane's" son … I hate your character, you tried to kill Erica." When I was on "Melrose Place," people recognized me from that and since "Something Borrowed" came out, I've been recognized more  from that, so it just kind of depends what I'm working on at the moment.

Speaking of "at the moment," you can see Colin Egglesfield recurring on TNT's "Rizzoli & Isles." He plays "Tommy," the troubled brother of "Jane Rizzoli" (Angie Harmon) and son of Angela Rizzoli (Lorraine Bracco).

Egglesfield's next episode titled "Gone, Daddy Gone" airs on Monday, September 5 at 10 pm EST. When a young, female dockworker is found dead, the team discovers that the dock has mob connections that may lead to Maura's biological father (guest star John Doman The Wire). Jane tries to evade sensitivity training, and Maura starts spending time with Jane's brother Tommy (guest star Colin Egglesfield), much to Jane's dismay. Ed Begley Jr. (St. Elsewhere) also guest-stars.

Colin Egglesfield's Biography

Colin Egglesfield is an emerging talent who is poised to become one of the industry's most promising rising stars. He appears opposite Kate Hudson, Ginnifer Goodwin and John Krasinski in the romantic comedy about a Manhattan attorney (Goodwin) who becomes involved with her best friend's (Hudson) fiancé (Egglesfield). The film is directed by Luke Greenfield and was released on May 6, 2011. Colin recently wrapped the independent feature film "Open Road" co-starring Andy Garcia, Juliette Lewis, and Camilla Belle. He also starred in the Lifetime's "Carnal Innocence." His other television roles include guest appearances on such TV shows as "Law & Order: SVU," "Leap of Faith," "Gilmore Girls," "Nip/Tuck."

Egglesfield's acting career took off beginning with his popular role of Josh for five seasons on "All My Children." Before that, he was discovered by famed photographer Bruce Weber while on a vacation in New York. This immediately led to model work for Ralph Lauren, Versace, and Calvin Klein. Shortly thereafter, Egglesfield was walking the runways of Milan, New York, and Paris and doing photo shoots around the world.

Egglesfield was born in Farmington Hills, Michigan. At the age of 10, his family moved to Crete, Illinois, a suburb of Chicago, where his father continued his medical practice and his mother opened up a café. Following high school, Colin attended Illinois Wesleyan University, then transferred to the University of Iowa a year later to pursue a degree in biology/ pre-med, in hopes of following in his father's footsteps.

An avid runner who completed the Chicago, New York, and San Diego marathons, Egglesfield has also raised money for such not-for-profits as Team for Kids, Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, and the Lance Armstrong Foundation. In addition, he has tutored high school students at The Door Youth Center in lower Manhattan and plans to continue his quest to create better educational opportunities for disadvantaged children wherever possible.
