Helen Wagner Remembrance
By Beth
5/6/10

On May 1, 2010, As the World Turns and its longtime
viewers lost one of its matriarchs, Helen Wagner, known as
Nancy, Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. McClosky, Gram, or simply, Mom.
Helen died peacefully at the age of 91. She practically
worked right up to the end. She was last seen at the
renewing of Bob and Kim's nuptials sitting on the couch on
April 5, 2010 -- 54 years after her first appearance on
April 2, 1956.
Many of us grew up watching her mother or grandmother
just about everyone in Oakdale. I watched with my late
paternal grandmother until her death some years ago.
Helen wasn’t only an accomplished actress but a singer
also. She sang in many opera halls and Broadway theaters.
She would occasionally sing on the show, mostly during the
holidays or anniversaries. She always had a wise word for
anyone who came to her. She was also quickwitted and feisty
at times, but she always had a warmth that made you love
her.
I and many As the World Turns viewers will miss her. I am
just sorry she didn’t see the show to its end. Or maybe it
is a good thing for she loved it so..
