Gotham: The Complete First Season Blu-ray

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 9/10/15

This is a truly great show, and I love it. I'm a huge comic-book fan. I used to read them in the 60's and 70's because I have three older brothers who got me hooked on them. Superman and Batman were always my favorites. I always loved the Batman movies, and I confess that I used to love the awful and campy Batman TV show. I've seen many of the later animated series as well. Gotham follows in the fine tradition of those shows.

It's very dark and scary, as Gotham should be. It's also quirky, weird, funny, passionate, and artsy. It rises above the level of most TV shows. The acting is fantastic and the writing is just really well done. This doesn't surprise me, coming from the same creator as "The Mentalist," another fine show that I love. I've been watching it since the first episode and my opinion has not wavered. We have a small section of our site devoted to it as well. I love star Ben McKenzie (Jim) ever since "The O.C.," so I probably would have watched it regardless of how good it was just because he's in it. I also loved Donal Logue ever since his great FX show "Terriers."  The rest are just icing on the cake. It's a phenomenal cast.

Even though the show is about Batman's town and villains, it's not really about him as a superhero because he's still a young boy in the series. That's part of the appeal of the show. Gotham is a corrupt city where the only "hero" is Detective Jim Gordon.  His failure is linked to the rise of supervillains in Gotham, and that's how Batman comes about. It's great to see how Batman and his nemeses develop over time. I just hope the series is on for a long time, so we can see that happen.

I read somewhere that some fans don't like the actor who plays Bruce. I don't really understand that at all. He's a really good actor, especially for his age. I think he is a wonderful actor, and I look forward to seeing what else he can do. He's in great company, and the series never disappoints me.

I'm very glad to get the shows on DVD. The set has tons of extras and features. More than you may have time to watch! I really enjoy watching every little insight from the writers, creator, producers, writers and actors on the show.  Season 2 starts soon and it's awesome, too!

BURBANK, CA (June 4, 2015) – With an average of 9.6 million viewers per week, Gotham has captured and held the attention of audiences since the premiere episode which delivered FOX’s highest-rated fall drama debut in 14 years with Adults 18–49. Before there was Batman, there was Gotham City. Everyone knows the name of Commissioner Gordon, but what of his rise from rookie detective to Police Commissioner? What did it take to navigate the layers of corruption in Gotham City, the spawning ground of the world’s most iconic villains? Gotham tells the story of the world’s most iconic DC Comics Super-Villains and vigilantes from the very beginning, revealing an entirely new chapter that has never been told. From executive producer Bruno Heller (The Mentalist, Rome), this crime drama follows GCPD Detective James Gordon’s rise through a dangerously corrupt city, while also chronicling the genesis of one of the most popular DC Comics Super Heroes of our time. Although the crime drama follows Gordon’s turbulent and singular career, it also focuses on his unlikely friendship with the young Bruce Wayne – with his mentorship a crucial element in developing the mythology of Gotham City.

“We are thrilled to release Gotham: The Complete First Season on Blu-ray and DVD for fans to explore the unique origin story of Gotham and its characters” said Rosemary Markson, WBHEG Senior Vice President, Television Marketing. “With this release, fans will be able to get acquainted with the early chapters of their favorite Super Hero prior to the premiere of season two.”
