Victor & Nicholas
by
Christopher
Unlike sister Victoria, Nicholas
Newman was mostly raised by step-father Jack Abbott, his
father's greatest enemy. Nicholas was close to Victor, but
considered Jack his father in all ways that mattered. When
he returned from boarding school in Switzerland, he was
intent on proving himself in the business world. He
graduated from Genoa City University with accolades and
earned himself a position in his Father's company, Newman
Enterprises. What followed was a series of attempts on his
part to prove to his Father that he could make decisions
for himself. However, when Nicholas united with Jack and
Brad Carlton in a business deal not approved by Victor,
his Father rewarded him by canceling the deal and leaving
Nick to feel like he had no support. He set out on his own
and purchased a coffeehouse, later expanding to two
businesses. Victor didn't approve and reduced Nick's
workload and responsibilities at NE as a form of
punishment.
When Nick ended up in prison for a crime he didn't
commit, Victor fought tirelessly to prove his son's
innocence, and they seemed on the verge of repairing their
broken relationship when Nick was cleared of all charges
and released. However, Nick and Sharon's marriage was in
jeopardy and Victor was lending an ear. Nick was
increasingly bothered by his Father's 'interference' and
asked him to keep his distance from the troubled Sharon.
But Victor remained by her side, and in a moment of
weakness (when he was on painkillers and she was an
emotional basket case) the two kissed. Nick witnessed the
kiss and was horrified.
Nick left Sharon and she fled town, devastated. When
Cassie, their daughter, nearly died after falling into a
frozen pond, Nick refused to allow Victor to see his
granddaughter. Nikki, in a shockingly emotional moment,
learned the truth about Nick's anger towards his Father.
She lashed out at her husband for allowing Sharon to
initiate that kiss and warned that Nick would never
forgive Victor. When Sharon returned to town, she fought
against Victoria and Nikki while trying to win back Nick's
love. Only Victor offered her support.
In an effort to improve relations with his son, Victor
chose to begin mentoring Nick to take over NE someday.
Victoria, who had been in the business longer and with
more notable success, was furious and saddened by her
Father's choice. Then Nick learned that Victor had bribed
key store owners to give preferential treatment to NE's
new product line, over a similar line created by Jabot.
Out of loyalty to his former step-father Jack, and out of
resentment for Victor, Nick turned his Father in to the
Federal Authorities. Christine Blair, Victor's long-time
friend, was forced to arrest Victor, who spent Christmas
Eve in jail. Father and son bonded briefly when Victor
faced his birth Father, shortly before the man died.
However, it wasn't enough. When he was released and
eventually given community service as punishment, Victor
fired Nick from NE and replaced him with Neil Winters.
Victor did reach out to Nick, and try to convince him to
work with him in his community service project, but Nick
refused.
Meanwhile, Victoria Newman, saddened by her family's
turmoil, left town to start her life anew. Back to the Main Y&R History
