The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Sixth Season

The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Sixth Season

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 9/5/15

I've watched every episode of this show, and I always enjoy it. It has good writing that twists and turns, making us wonder what happens next. There is a lot of romance in the show. It's really more of a soap opera than anything else.  We care way more about who Elena will love than any supernatural things.  I love the actors, especially Ian Somerhalder (Damon).

There's always been a lot of sadness and some violence in the show, but it's definitely gotten worse over the years.  That's the problem with any series that has so many shocks and surprises. The writers have to keep upping the ante. The shocks and surprises have to get bigger and bigger (and that becomes more violent and more action-oriented), until eventually it becomes ridiculous and somewhat cartoonish.

When almost everyone in the show has died and come back to life multiple times, and become a vampire or werewolf, and broken up and gotten back together, and gone evil (and then back to good), it's just too much after awhile. This season was harder to watch than previous seasons because of all that. Also, it was just sadder.

First we had Bonnie and Damon in their fake world, but then it was just Bonnie for a long time.  They mourned her. Caroline went bad for a while. Let's put it this way, there was just a lot of death, sadness and heartbreak.  At the end, they killed off Elena, one of the 3 major stars of the show. Wow. Sure, great shock, but then again... it's hard to watch as well. It seems kind of like a big disappointment for fans who've been rooting for her to choose either Damon or Stefan or Matt.  In the end, none of them get her. They also killed off Alaric's girlfriend and their baby. That was hard to watch. Poor Alaric!

I hope that Elena's death revitalizes the show. I can't wait to see how they deal with it in Season 7. I hope things get a little cheerier and they find a way to make the show less violent and have a better direction. Somehow, though, I doubt they will. I will keep watching, though.

I would suggest that if you watch the DVD, you first watch the previous seasons so you know what's going on. This is a soap!

The Blu-Ray was great, and I enjoyed watching the features, especially the goodbyes to the actors who are leaving. I will also miss the actor who played Liam. He was very good. You can see a great list of the features below.

BURBANK, CA (June 2, 2015) – Mystic Falls bids farewell to one of TV's hottest vampires when The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Sixth Season, is released on Blu-ray™ and DVD on September 1, 2015, from Warner Bros. Home Entertainment. Season Six is also available to purchase on Digital HD. Averaging nearly 2.7 million viewers weekly in its sixth season, The Vampire Diaries remains The CW’s #1 show with young female demos and will return for a seventh season on The CW this fall.  Fans can get sucked into all 22 one-hour episodes from season six and gorge on nearly two hours of gripping extras — including two brand-new featurettes, episodic audio commentary, the 2014 Comic-Con panel, deleted scenes and a gag reel. The Vampire Diaries continues its sixth season with more delicious drama to sink your teeth into. In season five, after a passionate summer with Damon, Elena headed to Whitmore College with Caroline, not knowing Bonnie sacrificed her life for Jeremy’s. Meanwhile, Stefan and Caroline’s friendship deepened as they stood up to the Travelers, a nomadic witch tribe driven to strip Mystic Falls of magic and cast out its supernatural residents. In the shocking season finale, Damon, fearing he would lose his loved ones on the crumbling Other Side, made a huge sacrifice to bring them all back — with catastrophic and heartbreaking results. Season six follows the characters’ journey back to each other as they explore the duality of good versus evil inside themselves. Matt Davis reprises his role as Alaric Saltzman, recently returned from The Other Side. Plus, the season will make you misty-eyed as the departure of a major character will turn lives upside down and leave us asking what happened to Mystic Falls.

With Blu-ray’s unsurpassed picture and sound, The Vampire Diaries: The Complete Sixth Season Blu-ray release will include 1080p Full HD Video with DTS-HD Master Audio for English 5.1. The 4-disc Blu-ray will feature a Hi-definition Blu-ray, and a Digital HD copy of all 22 episodes from Season Six.
