Power

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 5/10/15

This is a good drama, but it's not really my kind of show. I don't like shows where the protagonists are bad guys, villains, mobsters, gangsters, or murderers. This is one of those type of shows where even the law enforcement are corrupt and bad.  Unlike "Empire," it doesn't have much humor and very little music (it has background music but not singing like "Empire"), so it doesn't even have that going for it. The people are trashy, but it's not the good kind of fun trashy like "Empire" or other soaps.

James "Ghost" St. Patrick is a successful night club owner, but he also is a drug kingpin. He has a wife and child, and he also has a mistress. The double life is hard to maintain, and that's mostly what the show is about. He tries to leave the gang life, which is also difficult. At least he's trying to be the good guy, so that's something.

I kept watching this, wondering what terrible thing would happen. In this type of show, terrible things inevitably happen. I don't mind a good drama, but when it's nothing but unhappy people doing terrible things, the show's too depressing.

Starz often has shows like this, so I know their viewers are used to it. It's a shame they can't lighten up a little and make more 3-dimensionsal characters. This is not to say that the writing is all terrible, if you like these type of tragic, horrible shows. There are many twists and turns in the plot.

Oh, yeah, and since it's from Starz, there is nudity and lots of 4 letter words. That doesn't bother me at all, but it might bother some. The show is produced by "50 Cent" so it appeals, I'm sure, to rap artists and people who like them. I'm probably just too old to enjoy it.

There are tons of great extras, so if you like the show, you'll find many interesting things to watch about the show's style, music, background etc. Check it out if you like shows about gangstas.

Power: The Complete First Season” is gritty and uncompromising entertainment that the New York Daily News says, “conjures the best recent dramas that have explored [the] dark-and-light theme, like ‘The Sopranos’ and ‘Sons of Anarchy.’” Each episode unfolds with new twist and turns, schemes and scams, each revealing a bit of the seedy underbelly of modern urban life. Hard choices are made every day on these mean streets – choose wisely.
