The Circus Season 1 DVD cover

  The Circus Season 1

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 5/1/17

I think anyone interested in the 2016 presidential election will enjoy this DVD set of this docu-series.  However, it may be too painful still for some to watch (especially anyone who is horrified that Donald Trump is president).  This 5 disk set follows each of the candidates throughout the campaign. You see a lot of behind-the-scenes stuff. It's great for any political junkie.

This is not my kind of series because I don't have this kind of deep interest in politics.  I know many poli sci professors, though, so I'm sure they would like it. If you didn't watch the series on Showtime, you might enjoy it now.

The only warning is that it wouldn't play in my regular DVD player, which is fairly old. It played fine in my Blu-Ray player, even though it's not a Blu-Ray set.

THE CIRCUS: INSIDE THE GREATEST POLITICAL SHOW ON EARTH

Docu-series Following The 2016 Bid For President of the United States
Available for Pre-Order On Amazon

SANTA MONICA –  “The Circus: Inside The Greatest Political Show on Earth,” the real-time political docu-series about a presidential campaign, is available on demand at Amazon.com and other online merchants for $34.99 on Blu-Ray and $29.99 on  DVD, from CBS Home Entertainment.

Pulling back the curtain on the 2016 presidential race, the 26 half-hour episodes follow key characters and stories from the campaigns, taking viewers behind-the-scenes and deep inside the fiercest competition on earth -- where the ultimate prize is the most powerful office in the world.

Produced in cooperation with Bloomberg Politics, “The Circus” features Mark Halperin and John Heilemann (co-authors of the New York Times best-sellers Game Change and Double Down, who both served as co-hosts of the nightly political show "With All Due Respect" on Bloomberg Television and MSNBC and Managing Editors of Bloomberg Politics during the 2016 election cycle) and noted campaign strategist Mark McKinnon, as they in turn follow candidates along the campaign trail. “The Circus” is produced by Left/Right, a part of Red Arrow Entertainment Group for SHOWTIME. Mark Halperin, John Heilemann, Mark McKinnon, Banks Tarver, Ken Druckerman and Scott Boggins serve as executive producers. Ted Bourne and Mary Robertson are co-executive producers. The series aired throughout 2016 on SHOWTIME®.

Brimming with emotion, intimacy and irreverence, “The Circus” reveals the drama, comedy and pathos behind the headlines, laying bare the candidates and the people around them for what they are: fueled at once by ambition and idealism, endlessly fascinating and inevitably flawed... and deeply, recognizably human.  The series kicks off in January 2016 with attention focused on three ‘outsiders’ Donald Trump, Ted Cruz and Bernie Sanders on the road to the Iowa caucus; and continues to crisscross the country, from the primaries, as the Republican field narrows, to the fierce head-to-head debates between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, through election night itself.  Along the way, “The Circus” reveals the intense, irreverent, inspiring and infuriating stories behind the headlines of one of the most fascinating and consequential elections in modern history.
