Review of "The
Good Cop"
10/27/18 by
Eva Diaz
airs now on Netflix
I had seen a few interviews with the stars of this show,
Tony Danza(Tony Carusso, Sr.) and Josh Groban (Tony Carusso,
Jr., AKA T.J) and since I am a fan of both of them, I
thought I would watch it. Tony Sr. is a corript cop who just
got out of jail for taking bribes. Tony is ordered to live
with his son, T.J., who is an upstanding and smart police
detective. The father and son clash because they didn't
spend too much time together while T.J was growing up
because his father was always workimg. T.J. is very good
police detective who has an uncanny ability to solve crimes
because he notices things about a crime scene that other
cops may overlook. T.J. also always follows the letter of
the law, while his father tends to want to break the rules.
This show reminds me a little bit of "Monk" because
the cases are a bit quirky and fun to watch. I like the
show, but as much as I like Tony Danza, he just doesn't seem
to be the type of guy who would take bribes and go to jail.
Tony is playing this like he has his other characters --
funny and fun-loving, and when he tries to do scenes that
are supposed to be of him talking to his pals about all the
bad things he did in his past, it just doesn't seem credible
to me. Tony is great at the scenes with his son, T.J., where
he wants to work at building a better relationship with him.
Josh Groban is a good actor, but I think that he is taking
his role too seriously and sometimes coming off stiff and
not natural in his scenes. Groban does do better in his
father-son scenes with Danza; he seems more relaxed and at
ease.
If you are a fan of "Monk", you will like this
show. although it's not as good as "Monk." it will remind
you enough of the show to keep you watching and make you
laugh. It is worth watching but needs work . I will keep
watching and hope for improvement. I give this show 3 out of
5 stars. |
MORE INFORMATION:
In The Good Cop, Tony Danza plays Big Tony, a
lovable yet not exactly honorable, former NYPD officer who
never followed the rules. He lives with his son, TJ, Josh
Groban, a brilliant, straight-laced NYPD detective who makes
a point of always following the rules while solving
Brooklyn’s toughest cases. This “odd couple” become
unofficial partners as Tony Sr. offers his overly-cautious
son blunt, street-wise advice. Also joining the cast are
Monica Barbaro, Isiah Whitlock, Jr and Bill Kottkamp.
Andy Breckman, the creator of Monk, serves as
showrunner and executive producer, with Randy Zisk (Bones,
Monk), and Howard Klein (The Office,
The Mindy Project) also serving as executive producers.
Tony Danza is a producer on The Good Cop. The
series is inspired by a format from Israeli production
company YES, who also serve as executive producers. The
Good Cop is a Netflix original production.
