Unreal Season 1 DVD cover

Unreal Season 1

 Review by Suzanne Lanoue 1/18/16

I just love this show, and I'm very happy to have the DVD. Even though it's only ten episodes, they pack a lot into them.  This show has fantastic writing and really good acting. They manage to somehow have very real characters that you love, or love to hate. They're just such complex characters of the type you rarely see in TV.

The show is about a fictional "reality show" like "The Bachelor" called "Everlasting."  The heroine is producer Rachel (Shiri Appleby), who's a really messed up girl. She's coming back to the show after she had a mental breakdown. Her job is to do whatever she can to make the show intriguing to audiences, whether it involves lying, cheating, stealing etc.  She's back on the show but trying to avoid doing things that are repugnant, and also trying to deal with the fact that her boyfriend is now with another woman.

Constance Zimmer plays Quinn, a real hard-ass boss of the show. She's also in a long-term extra-marital relationship with her boss, Chet (Craig Bierko, in the role of a lifetime), the owner of the show.  At first, Quinn seems like a bit of a monster, but we learn more about her and what makes her tick.

Josh Kelly (from "One Life to Live") plays Rachel's sometimes-ex boyfriend, Jeremy, and he's great, too. All of them just do a fabulous job. I'm not exaggerating here. This was one of the best new shows this year. You're really cheating yourself out of an entertaining show if you don't watch this one.

It's hard to classify because it's a drama, yet it's funny as hell. Also, it's often like a soap opera, but it's better written than any soap you've ever seen. Anyone who likes a good comedy, drama, or soap opera, or who loves reality shows, should watch this.

"UnReal" was created by Marti Noxon and Sarah Gertrude Shapiro.  Noxon has a long resume as a writer of fantastic shows such as "Mad Men," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "Grey's Anatomy," and "Prison Break." Shapiro was a producer in "The Bachelor," so she's drawing on her own experiences at that reality show.

You don't want to miss this show! Catch up now by buying this DVD, and then prepare for season 2. I can't wait to see what happens in season 2!  The DVD has some great featues as well that really get you more into the show.

Season 1

Lifetime’s Critically Acclaimed Scripted Series Goes Behind the Scenes of a Reality Dating Show — Arriving on DVD January 26

SANTA MONICA, CA (November 19, 2015) – Lifetime®’s scandalous new scripted series UnREAL pulls back the curtain and gives viewers a glimpse into the chaos surrounding the production of a fictitious dating competition. UnREAL: Season 1 arrives on DVD (plus Digital HD) on January 26 from Lionsgate Home Entertainment, including all ten episodes and all-new, behind-the-scenes bonus features. One of the standout shows of 2015 and already confirmed for a second season, the tantalizing drama has captivated media attention with inclusions in Entertainment Weekly’s “The Must List” and Yahoo! TV’s “Best TV Summer Ever” list. Creating a stir amongst viewers, UnREAL provides a wildly entertaining look at just how far producers might go to make drama on screen.

Set against the backdrop of a fictional dating show, UnREAL is led by Rachel Goldberg (Shiri Appleby, HBO’s “Girls”), a young staffer whose sole job is to manipulate her relationships with, and amongst, the show’s contestants to get the vital dramatic and outrageous footage that the program’s dispassionate executive producer, Quinn King (Constance Zimmer, Netflix’s “House of Cards”), demands. UnREAL also stars Craig Bierko (TV’s “Damages”) as “Everlasting”’s eccentric creator, Chet; and Freddie Stroma (HBO’s “Game of Thrones”) as the dating show’s handsome and intelligent suitor, Adam Cromwell.

UnREAL was named one of this year’s Most Exciting New Series for the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, and has also been nominated in the Breakthrough Series category at this year’s Gotham Independent Film Awards. UnREAL is the first scripted series fully produced and distributed by A+E Studios and has been sold in more than 100 territories.

Including every episode from the hit debut season and dangerously juicy, never-before-seen-on-TV footage about the show and the development of the characters, the UnREAL: Season 1 DVD will be available at the suggested retail price of $26.98.
