DVD Reviews
I'm a lifelong fan of Broadway musicals, and this is one
of the best movie adaptations of a Broadway musical ever
made. It has wonderful music and great acting as well as
really good directing and cinematography. Although
Audrey Hepburn is not a great singer, they dub her very
well, and she lights up the screen with her presence and her
fine acting. Rex Harrison is great in this and it was really
his signature role, both on Braodway and in the movie (and
in many subsequent stage versions), just like Yul Brenner
and "The King and I."
Rex Harrison is not much of a singer, but he acts the
role very well. He does this talk-singing kind of thing that
works well for him. It was done a lot in the movies back in
the 60's and 70's, especially when they cast non-singers in
musicals. The whole cast is great.
The music is fantastic and you'll no doubt recognize the
songs that have now become standards, like "Wouldn't It Be
Loverly?," "Get Me to the Church on Time," "On the Street
Where You Live" and "I Could Have Danced All Night."
If you haven't seen this movie, you definitely should
because you'll never find a better musical movie than this
one.
This is a classic story from the play "Pygmalion" about a
bored professor who takes in a young flower girl and turns
her into a sophisticated lady, on a bet. In turn, she makes
him become kinder and more human as he falls in love with
her (even though he doesn't much like women, or other
people).
The Blu-Ray has great color. Even though the
Oscar-winning musical is
50 years old, it looks brand new. It has a lot of
great features that you can below. It's hours of
entertainment. This would make a great gift for just
about anyone.
I have to mention, too, that the packaging is beautiful.
It has a metal-type of package that somehow fits together
with a magnet. It's really cool. I love when DVD's have
unusual packaging.
