"Containment" review by Suzanne
1/13/16
Premieres April 19 on The CW
I'm a huge fan of geek shows, but there are some of scifi/horror
shows that I can't watch because they gross me out too much.
I don't mind the blood on most Vampire shows, but I don't
like shows where there are body parts falling off, or
they're spewing bodily fluids. I don't watch "The Walking
Dead" or any zombie shows; or "The Strain." I also didn't
watch "Helix." I mean, I tried watching some of these shows,
and I could see that most of them are well-written and
enjoyable, except I just don't like the gross stuff. I can't
take it. It's not fun for me.
This new show "Containment" is one of those. It reminds
me of the movie "Outbreak" (1995), but that was made over 20
years ago, so it wasn't nearly as gross as TV is nowadays.
And even so, who wants to watch that every week? I just
don't get it.
It's a very good show about a viral outbreak in Atlanta.
The disease spreads quickly via bodily fluids and kills
within 48 hours. As soon as they figure it out, they cordon
off part of the city (the original name for this show was
"Cordon"). It's kind of like a disaster movie where you get
to know all of the characters, and then you try to figure
out which ones are going to die by the end.
This TV show goes a bit farther than just the spread of
disease, though. There are political implications because
the virus is brought to this country via a Syrian refugee.
People wonder if it is bio-terrorism. So it's very timely.
Julie Plec (Vampire Diaries writer) developed the show,
which is based on a Belgian show of the same name.
Claudia Black (of "Farscape" and "Stargate: SG1") stars
as the CDC woman in charge of the containment (she looks
very different as a blonde!). David Gyasi stars as Lex,
the cop put in charge to work with her and be the face to
the public. Adorable Chris Wood (Kai on "Vampire Diaries")
plays his cop buddy, Jake. Before the outbreak, Lex was
moving in with his girlfriend, Lena. She and Jake used
to date, too. George Young stars as Victor, a handsome young
doctor in the hospital. Hanna Mangan Lawrence plays Theresa,
a pregnant young woman trying to give up her baby for
adoption. Kristen Gutoskie plays Katie, a teacher whose
class was visiting the hospital on a field trip when the
outbreak hit; her son is one of the students as well. Trevor
St. John (an amazing actor known primarily for playing
Todd/Victor on "One Life to Live") plays Leo, a journalist
trying to find out the truth about the outbreak and how it's
being handled.
As you can tell, the writing is very good and has lots of
layers and relationships. It's a good show if you don't mind
seeing people bleeding from the eyes, coughing up blood,
etc. And don't get too attached to any of the characters,
because I'm guessing many of them die.

When a mysterious and deadly epidemic breaks out in
Atlanta, a vast urban quarantine is quickly enforced,
forcing those stuck on the inside to fight for their lives
while local and federal officials desperately search for a
cure. Trying to keep the peace on the streets is police
officer Lex Carnahan, who has quickly risen through the
ranks of the Atlanta PD. But Lex’s job becomes even harder
when he learns that his longtime girlfriend, Jana, and his
best friend and fellow officer Jake, are trapped within the
cordoned area. Also quarantined in viral ground zero is 17
year-old Teresa, who is eight months pregnant and now
separated from her boyfriend on the other side; Katie Frank,
an elementary school teacher now placed on lockdown with her
entire class, including her young son; and CDC researcher
Dr. Victor Cannerts, the doctor who initially made the
controversial call to quarantine the area and is now racing
to find a cure for the virus. On the outside, Dr. Sabine
Lommers is leading the government efforts to contain the
outbreak, and has asked for Lex’s help in enforcing the
cordon – which grows increasingly difficult as the public
trust deteriorates. And the public has reason to be wary, as
journalist Leo begins unraveling a conspiracy, finding that
something doesn’t add up in the official story being told.
Torn apart from their loved ones, the survivors trapped
within the cordon are fighting against not only fatal
infection, but also isolation, fear, and the disintegration
of society around them. But as they begin to gain each
other’s trust, hope remains, and on either side of the
cordon unlikely heroes will rise. CONTAINMENT stars David
Gyasi (“Interstellar”); Christina Moses (“Starship:
Apocalypse,” “Starship: Rising”); Chris Wood (“The Vampire
Diaries”); Kristen Gutoskie (“Beaver Falls”); Claudia Black
(“The Originals,” “Farscape”); George Young (“Casualty”);
Hanna Mangan Lawrence (“Spartacus: War of the Damned”); and
Trevor St. John (“One Life to Live”). Based on the original
Belgian series created by Carl Joos for Eyeworks,
CONTAINMENT is produced by My So-Called Company in
association with Warner Bros. Television, with executive
producers Julie Plec (“The Vampire Diaries,” “The
Originals”) and David Nutter (“The Flash,” “Arrow”).
