Tessa was at Crimson Lights with Sharon. Tessa felt that all Mariahs texts had been reassuring, but vague. She wished they could call the police, but she knew it was too soon. She thought it was weird that Mariah was only communicating through text. Abby called with a message from Jack, and Tessa put her on speaker. Jack spoke to the marketing department, and they werent aware of Mariahs trip, but he texted her, and she said she was fine and that she was taking a couple days off. Sharon was relieved. Abby asked why Mariah didnt tell them any of this. Sharon suggested that Mariah didnt want to hurt anyones feelings by saying she needed some space. The call ended. Tessa wished she knew what was going on in Mariahs head this didnt seem like her. Sharon thought Mariah might be feeling overwhelmed by the surrogacy she might feel like every move she made was being watched and judged. Tessa just wished shed known something was going on with Mariah. Sharon didnt think Tessa should feel bad, since Mariah didnt wear her heart on her sleeve. Tessa was sure that she was the one that Mariah would confide in. Tessa wouldve gone with Mariah if shed wanted to leave town for awhile. Sharon suggested Mariah didnt want to impose. Tessa got choked up as she decided to send Mariah text expressing her love and support and saying she wanted Mariah to come home. Tessa turned away to send the text, and Sharons reassuring expression was replaced by concern. Tessa left.
Faith went to Crimson Lights after therapy, and she got a drink for herself and Moses. Sharon thought last time the teens hung out, things got awkward. Faith said it was beyond awkward, and she was surprised he agreed to meet her. Sharon had some relationship advice, which she shared even though Faith asked her to please stop. Sharon thought Faith should be honest with Moses if she liked him as more than a friend. Moses walked in, and Faith took him out to the patio.
Stitch walked in, and Sharon was pleasantly surprised to see him. She offered him a drink on the house and asked what hed been up to. They got a table, and she expressed sympathy when she heard his son Max wasnt well. He didnt want to discuss it anymore because the subject always turned into a pity party. She asked how work was going. He asked her not to tell anyone, but just as he was about to leave town, he got a call from the board at Memorial. They were considering him for his former bosss old job. He said itd be nice to move back to Genoa City, as some of his last few happy moments happened here. She noted that hed had a lot of good friends here, especially Dylan. She added that a lot of people loved him in this town. He seemed hesitant, and she guessed he didnt want to leave Max. He said Max could stay in Iowa City, which was close enough to visit often. She asked if Abby was the issue.
Ben wasnt hung up on Abby anymore, but he was concerned his presence would be a reminder of painful times for her. Sharon said you couldnt always make a decision based on how itd affect an ex. Nobodys life was pure happiness. Ben thought Abby seemed to have come close with Chance and the little boy Mariah was carrying. He didnt want to disrupt that. Sharon didnt think he would. He thought she must be proud of Mariah for giving Chance and Abby this gift. She was, but she gave a look that made him ask if hed said something wrong. She explained that Mariah was off on some mysterious trip, and she was fine, but they were all a little concerned. He said he was sorry; he didnt know. How could you?, she asked. He said Abby and Tessa must be worried sick about Mariah and the baby.
On the patio, Moses asked Faith why she invited him here. She thought they could hang out, like usual. He didnt realize they were doing that anymore. He noted that they were having so much fun at the ranch, then it got weird. She took all the blame and apologized. She said she got self-conscious because she thought he was going to say some things about where their friendship was headed. He assumed she didnt want to hear what hed been planning to say. She assured him that she did, and shed thought about saying those things too, but after everything shed been through in the last few months, she needed things to go slow. He understood. She asked if they could keep spending lots of time together as friends, and he said yes. Sharon looked out from behind the counter and saw Moses and Faith laughing. She smiled at them, then she texted Mariah that she was thinking of her.
Devon was at Amandas reading an article about the Newman Locke merger. He told her it was going to be huge. He noticed that she was reading one her laptop, and he acknowledged that she didnt care about this merger. She offered to pretend to care if it made him happy, but he didnt need that. He asked how her search was going. It wasnt successful, and she was convinced Sutton hired someone to scrub his online profile. The private investigator hadnt found anything either. She wished she did a deeper dive into Sutton when she was representing him. She was so focused on researching Richard that she didnt have time, and now she thought Sutton got rid of any incriminating information. She thought the best way to create reasonable doubt in Nayas case was to prove Sutton wasnt as upstanding as he appeared to be. She was looking for something, like a shady deal or an interaction with the person he hired to tamper with the brakes, to prove he was capable of killing Richard. Amanda felt this was the most important case of her life she had to make sure the truth about her fathers murder came to light. Devon was sure it would. He got a text from Abby asking him to come by.
Billy approached Tara in the park and asked how she was doing after the news. She lamented that the video of Ashland was what passed for news these days. Billy said that the live stream about the merger and Ashlands announcement of his illness all seemed perfectly timed with that video. She replied that Ashland didnt exactly share his decisions with her these days. He told her that he didnt post the video, and she replied that it was nice someone had ethics, though she noted that hed published the story on the divorce. He explained that the divorce was news, but they werent going to exploit Ashlands illness, especially not knowing who took the video, or why they posted it. It seemed particularly unsavory to Billy, given that a child was involved. Tara was glad Harrison was in a caring family. She decided to go back to her son, so she left. He was going to call Lily, but he changed his mind and he left as well.
Just the woman I want to see, Billy said to Phyllis at the hotel. She replied that he wasnt even in the top 100 people she wanted to see. She apologized for not being her usual charming self. Shed been up 24 hours and she just got back from Italy. He assumed she went to see Summer. She added that she also saw Nick for a romantic rendezvous before he went to London to spend time with Noah. She decided to get back to work, but he said he had a favor to ask her. She wasnt interested until he said it was about Tara. She asked if it was about an article, and when he said it was personal, she assumed it had something to do with Ashland and Victoria. Billy wanted to know what made Tara tick, and as Phyllis had a front row seat to the situation with Tara, Kyle and Summer, he assumed she had an interesting perspective. Phyllis asked Billy if he also had a secret baby with Tara. No, I dont but I love where your heads at, and thats exactly what Im looking for. Your complete and utter lack of trust in any other person, he replied.
Amanda and Devon came downstairs, and she stopped and looked at Billy. Devon asked if she wanted to say hi. She didnt want to interrupt, because Phyllis and Billys talk seemed intense, but seeing Billy gave her an idea on solving her Sutton problem.
Billy told Phyllis how hed sensed something off about Tara at the Abbott family gathering. It wasnt anything Tara did shed been extremely nice. Phyllis thought that was the weird thing about Tara; she was working so hard to seem effortlessly gracious. He agreed, and his gut told him something was wrong. Phyllis thought Billys gut was usually wrong, but she felt he was on to something in this case. He admitted that no one else felt the same way, not even Ashley, the human lie detector. He stated that everyone made an effort to make Tara feel welcome, and shed worked her way into the Abbott circle in record time. Poor girl, Phyllis sarcastically said, she threw a billionaire aside and now shes come to the Abbott house and shes welcomed with open arms. It must be so hard.
Billy conceded that Tara seemed to be a good mom; Harrison was adorable, and Billy didnt blame Tara for trying to give him stability right now. Phyllis thought she and Billy were thinking the same thing wondering if Tara was doing this for her kid or for herself. He wanted to know what Tara wanted and how far she was willing to go to get it. She asked again if this was about an article he was planning. He replied that this was about protecting his family and making sure Tara didnt take advantage of them. He also wanted to know what Sally had to do with it. This further piqued Phylliss interests.
Billy explained that he saw Tara and Sally at the park, and they seemed like more than casual acquaintances. It seemed a little intense. Phyllis noted that Sally was trying to worm her way into Jacks life, and she asked if Sally might be giving Tara pointers. He smiled and said he appreciated her protective instincts it made it clear that she was the right person for the job. Billy thought that whatever Tara was doing might have impacted Summers sudden departure. He mentioned that when he ran into Summer, she tried hard to cover the fact that she had mixed feelings about leaving and her breakup with Kyle. She even asked him to befriend Kyle. It all made him wonder why Summer was leaving so quickly. Oh my God. I bet Sally and Tara are behind this, Phyllis said. After confirming that they were on the same page, he asked how she wanted to handle it. She knew just how to handle the first stage, so he left it in her hands. He said she knew where to find him, then he walked out.
Phyllis called Summer and left a message stating that she arrived safely in Genoa City. Phyllis promised shed always have Summers back. She went to the Abbott house with the excuse of dropping off a gift for Jack from Summer. Phyllis acted very warm and gracious during the whole visit. Tara said he was at the office, and Phyllis said she shouldve called first. Phyllis was sorry for the intrusion; she sensed Tara didnt want company. Tara didnt mean to be rude; she had a lot on her mind. Phyllis was sure Tara did. Tara noticed Phyllis wasnt leaving, so she invited her to stay and chat for a bit. Phyllis thought it was time they had a little talk.
Tara asked about Summer, and Phyllis said she was doing great, and she loved her new job. Tara pretended that she hated to think her arrival had damaged Kyle and Summers relationship. Phyllis told Tara that she shouldnt even think that. She was proud her daughter realized she wasnt ready to be a stepmom. Tara noted that the job opened up in Italy. Phyllis marveled at the timing, then she assured Tara that she didnt blame her at all. Phyllis said she knew Tara was just trying to rebuild her life and do what was best for her son. The best thing was for Harrison to feel safe and secure, Phyllis stated. Tara gushed about the warm and welcoming Abbotts. She was grateful. She and her brother werent close, so for a long time, it was just her, Harrison and Ashland, and now Ashland was sick. She worried for Harrison. Phyllis replied with understanding. She announced that an idea just came to her Tara should have Kyle step up as the new man in Harrisons life. Tara felt the same way she didnt know how difficult Ashlands journey would be, but no matter what, Harrison needed support and continuity. She said Kyle already promised to be there for Harrison for years to come. The way it should be, Phyllis replied. Tara said she, Kyle and Harrison were a family now. Phyllis said she missed her daughter, but she thought things worked out the way they were supposed to for Summer and Kyle. Tara was so happy Phyllis saw it that way. I see things clearly now, Phyllis replied. She smiled at Tara and left. Once Phyllis got outside, she let her her disgust and suspicion show.
Amanda visited Lily in her office and shared her theory that Sutton killed her father and her mother was taking the fall. Lily was so sorry, and she asked how Amanda was handling this. Amanda was trying to channel her emotions into her work. She had to find something substantial that proved Sutton was the guilty party. Lily was sure Sutton covered his tracks. Amanda said she kept hitting dead ends, but when she saw Billy at the hotel earlier, she thought to herself that she knew a couple people with an outstanding and discreet investigation team. Lily asked why Amanda didnt ask Billy for help. Amanda explained that Billy and Phyllis were having an intense conversation that she didnt want to interrupt. Billy had that look in his eye that he got when he was fired up. Lily didnt know what that was about, but she assumed it was a lead on a story. Amanda added that Billy definitely had Phylliss attention.
Amanda was hoping ChancComm might have some veteran reporters with sources who could shed some light on Suttons backroom politics. Lily said they didnt have anyone like that on staff. She asked if there was anyone in Suttons circle who could help. Amanda thought Victor might be able to help. She said theyd met several times, and while he didnt appreciate her original theory that someone at Newman killed Richard, shed admitted she was wrong, and hed tried to help her find closure with her father. Lily thought Victor sounded like the ideal person to talk to he was used to dealing with men like Sutton, and he knew how to uncover dirt and push buttons. Billy walked in as Amanda was leaving. She told him that Lily would fill him in.
Billy asked what was going on. First, Lily wanted to know what he and Phyllis were up to. He brought her up to speed. Lily asked if there was a story in it. He said possibly, but right now it was personal. He didnt want to see Jack, and to a lesser extent, Kyle, get hurt. They were family. Lily thought that when Billy said personal, he was talking about Tara and Ashland and how that lead back to Victoria and the merger. He said that was more business than personal. Lily hoped Billy didnt think he had to keep these things from her. He said he just ran into Phyllis, and it was a last minute decision to talk to her. Lily knew. She said she just liked to watch Billy squirm. He got a call from Phyllis, and he asked Lily if she wanted to accompany him on the visit. She said no, she trusted him. He left, and she looked uncomfortable.
At the Chancellor house, Abby brought Devon up to speed on the Mariah situation. He was on edge, but he calmly pointed out that Mariah had only been gone a couple days, and shed been in contact with people the whole time. Abby conceded that Mariah might want some time alone, but she was barely communicating. Shed shut them all out, and Abby didnt know what to do. She wished Chance was here. Devon understood it was difficult not having Chance around, but he knew Chance would advise staying positive. He was sure Mariah just needed a break. Abby thought something felt off. Devon asked Abby to think about what Chance would do. She said hed hold her and tell a dumb joke to make her laugh. She already felt a bit better. He assured her Chance would come back to her. She needed Devon to keep telling her that. Tessa came home. Her long walk after her talk with Sharon didnt make her feel better. She shared Sharons theory that Mariah felt like she was under a microscope and the pressure got to her. A defensive Abby thought Tessa was accusing her of driving Mariah away. Tessa didnt mean that. Tessa admitted that shed constantly been on top of Mariah about nutrition, exercise and vitamins. You know what? Now that you mention it, you were being way more intense than I was, Abby stated. Tessa tensed up and Devon tried to keep the peace.
Tessa wondered if Mariah left because something terrible happened to the pregnancy. Abby thought she knew what Tessa was getting at. And you think that if something like that happened she wouldnt be able to face me because I hover too much and I cause , Abby was saying, when Tessa interrupted. No, not everything is about you, Abby! This is about Mariah and what she could be going through, Tessa snapped. Do you think I dont know that?, Abby spat. She added that she was so worried about Mariah and the baby. Devon chided the pair for attacking each other when they were on the same team. He reminded them that Mariah just said she wanted space, and there was no point in guessing what that meant. He was sure the last thing Mariah would want was to stress them out. Tessa and Abby apologized to each other. Devon had to leave for a conference call. Ben showed up at Abbys. She thought he was back in Iowa. He said something came up, and he was glad it did because Sharon just told him about Mariah. He was here if Abby needed him.
